For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an experienced computer scientist with a background cybersecurity with emphasis on using collaborative autonomy to improve cybersecurity of networks and critical infrastructure. You will provide subject matter expertise and leadership to research projects in the area of cybersecurity for critical infrastructure systems and civilian networks. You will leverage LLNL's collaborative autonomy capabilities to enable detection and response to cyber attacks and enhance resilience of critical infrastructure systems and civilian networks. You will participate in strategy and business development for the Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program in the Global Security (GS) Principal Associate Directorate. This position is programmatically in GS's E Program and administratively will report to the payroll supervisor of the hiring organization.

This position will be filled at either the SES.4 or SES.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

* Lead and support a diverse range of highly complex research projects requiring in-depth analysis and creative use of innovative methods in applying collaborative autonomy algorithms and concepts to enhance the cybersecurity and resilience of networks and critical infrastructure systems.
* Responsible for ensuring growth of existing and development of new collaborative autonomy capabilities at LLNL.
* Provide subject matter expertise in development of new algorithms for detection, response and mitigations for cyber attacks in cyber and cyber-physical systems (CPS).
* Identify new applications and opportunities for collaborative autonomy algorithms and help create vision and technical direction for using collaborative autonomy to enhance cybersecurity and resilience of cyber and cyber-physical systems and networks under the consultative direction of leadership.
* Develop new program growth opportunities through interactions with current and potential sponsors and the development of research proposals.
* Develop, drive and execute new ideas and approaches in the development and implementation of new collaborative autonomy algorithms to meet the sponsor and project needs.
* Mentor others and utilize technical expertise to attract and retain projects, programs and funding.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.5 Level

* Guide and provide scientific and technical direction for a portfolio of highly complex technical tasks and projects that consistently require the application of creativity and innovation; set broad research/project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for Laboratory, self and/or others wielding extensive influence with senior management and policy makes.
* Provide highly innovative solutions to abstract complex problems/, convert them into useable algorithms/software modules, and provide solutions that require in-depth analysis of multiple factors and the creative use of established methods.
* Responsible for high-level goal setting, strategic planning, directing and accomplishing project/program goals and objectives significantly impacting major Laboratory programs and contributing to the revolutionary advancement of knowledge

Qualifications

* Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, control theory, applied mathematics, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
* Expert level experience and aptitude in C, C++, or Python.
* Subject matter expert knowledge and experience of highly advanced concepts in parallel numerical linear algebra.
* Extensive experience in one or more of the following: distributed optimization, theory of iterative numerical methods, distributed consensus algorithms, fault-tolerant distributed computing, distributed control systems.
* Subject matter expert knowledge of and experience in control systems, OT and ICS/SCADA security.
* Experience in high performance computing, parallel programing, or cloud computing.
* Experience effectively leading teams and creating technical direction and vision, writing research proposals and securing sponsor funding.
* Expert ability to communicate comprehensive knowledge effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and to non-cyber experts, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors, and proficient interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate and lead in a team environment.

In Addition, at the SES.5 Level

* Expert knowledge in collaborative autonomy algorithms for cyber physical systems.
* Extensive experience and demonstrated ability to plan the integration and implementation of new programs and/or operational best practices.
* Extensive project leadership experience and demonstrated ability to apply, lead and develop innovative cutting-edge principles and research, work independently while effectively managing concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.

Desired Qualifications

* Ph.D. degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field and several years of relevant experience.
* Significant experience in systems engineering, including practical experience in critical infrastructure cybersecurity. Knowledge of one or more of the following computer science disciplines: embedded systems, scientific data analysis, machine learning, systems programming, software engineering, and big data technologies.
* Demonstrated ability to secure sponsor funding through winning proposals and sponsor relationships. Previous experience working Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense or utility company.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
