Job Description

Zymergen is seeking a Technical Lead for is client Projects Team. The Projects Tech Lead takes on the accountability of strain improvement program success. A successful Tech Lead possesses the technical, project management, and interpersonal skills as well as Zymergen internal operational knowledge relevant to orchestrate a large and complex Program towards milestone delivery.

Job Description and Specific Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership:

* Define initial technical scope of work to meet milestone
* Identify the standard methods by which Zymergen executes common work and apply these
* Identify gaps in current Zymergen capabilities and scope technical work to mitigate
* Monitor progress on and risks to Program milestones
* Adjust scope and resourcing of work where necessary
* Decide on and direct implementation of risk mitigation work
* Accountable as key SME on best practices for Program execution


* Manage contributing research staff assigned to Dev-Project teamIdentify and coordinate on development of new technologies that improve methods and processes for Program milestone delivery
* Provide technical content in client proposals, contracts, and reports
* Maintain strong relationship with client technical counterpart
* Deliver technical content in proposals during sales/scoping cycles
* Present key project updates during project execution
* Monitor and manage the resolution of issues arising from client technical needs
* Technical Project Management:
* Coordinate schedule of execution across subteams
* Compile and manage risk register and work breakdown (WBS) for technical workstreams
* Manage the "technical budget" (Factory capacity, direct allocated staffing resources, etc)
* Organize and lead various team and coordination internal meetings
* Facilitate issue resolution among internal contribution teams
* Clarify and communicate the RACI with internal contribution teams
* People management:
* Support direct reports in a matrix organization
* Set and monitor progress towards career development goals
* Manage performance reviews, promotions, feedback

Qualifications/Experience

We favor candidates with substantial experience designing and executing experiments in lab with Ph.D. in scientific discipline or equivalent experience the following areas:

* Molecular Biology and Biochemistry
* Cell Biology and Physiology
* Metabolic Engineering
* Genome Engineering
* Enzyme and Protein Engineering
