Introduction:

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Research Roboticist for the Research & Exploratory Development Department (REDD) Intelligent Systems Group.

The Intelligent Systems Group is a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers focused on developing the next generation of intelligent systems for the U.S. Government. The current emphasis of the Intelligent Systems Group is on machine learning, autonomy, applied neuroscience, machine perception, and robotics. The ISG is seeking a recent PhD graduate for a Research Roboticist post doc position.

Job Summary:

The Intelligent Systems Group within the Research and Exploratory Development Department is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Roboticist who is interested in working on a high energy, collaborative team that creates novel system concepts and rapid prototypes to address research questions and critical challenges for our sponsors. Current programs include research in dexterous manipulation, enhanced mobility, novel robotic systems (e.g., multi-domain), human-robot collaboration, and autonomous robot behaviors through the integration of learning, adaptation, control, and perception.

Duties (Listed in order of importance with the estimated amount of time spent at each task):

1. Conduct novel research in the areas of dexterous manipulation, enhanced mobility, novel robotic systems (e.g., multi-domain), human-robot collaboration, autonomous robot behaviors, or human-machine teaming to improve current capabilities in real-world environments. (75%)

2. Write and present technical papers and conference presentations. (20%)

3. Support sponsor engagement activities. (5%)

Qualifications

Required:

Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Engineering/Science, or a related field with 0 to 1 year of experience developing novel capabilities for robotic systems. Fundamental understanding of robotic/autonomous systems. Excellent communication skills.

Desired:

Machine perception, dexterous manipulation, mechanical design and fabrication, advanced controls, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and experience with programming languages such as Python, Java/C#/C , Matlab. Also, looking for candidate who works well in a team dynamic.

Security: Eligibility for a Secret level clearance is required. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
