The mission of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington is to provide high quality medical and surgical vision care for patients, develop new knowledge and treatments for eye diseases through clinical and basic research, and prepare the next generation of physicians and vision scientists to meet 21st century challenges in ophthalmology and vision research.
The Department of Ophthalmology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST/ENGINEER 2. The successful candidate will apply standard techniques to research assignments including: evaluation, selection, and application on big data and data science using cloud infrastructure.
Research:
Study of large clinical databases for novel associations and hypothesis generation.
Research Project Purpose:
Translation of cutting edge data science and Big Data techniques into clinical computational ophthalmology.
Mission:
The mission of the Department of Ophthalmology at UW is to provide high quality medical and surgical vision care for patients, develop new knowledge and treatments for eye diseases through clinical and basic research and prepare the next generation of physicians and vision scientists to meet 21st century challenges in ophthalmology and vision research.
Job Duties include:
Implementing research methods and protocols
Individual will learn and improve work practices and develop extensions to existing methods
Individual will develop cloud infrastructure and run data queries and analyses
Individual will present results and methodology in lab meetings and help write manuscripts.
Individual will help develop and run the laboratory website.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, mathematics, or physics.
Must have working knowledge of cloud computing including and not limited to AWS, Azure, and Google Compute.
Must be a proficient programmer with extensive experience or knowledge of the following technologies:
Programming languages: Python, R
Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Spark SQL, DynamoDB
Operating Systems: Linux command line
Code management / Virtualization: Github, Docker
Web development: HTML5, CSS3, Javascript
Must be detail oriented, efficient & well organized
Must have good analytical and interpersonal skills as well as enjoy working within a team
Experience maintaining office/lab schedule
Experience managing daily operations of office/lab
Willingness to gain developmental experience in project design and implementation
Desired:
Familiarity with AWS technologies including:
EC2
S3
EBS
Lambda
Redshift
Elastic Beanstalk
Batch
