The Department of Biochemistry at the University of Washington has contributed to many phases of research. Initially recognized for incisive studies of the structure and function of proteins, and the mechanisms of enzyme action, the department branched out into a multitude of other areas. These included: developmental biology of flies, fish, frogs, and mice; molecular mechanisms of aging in yeast and mammals; vertebrate visual and immune responses; chromosome dynamics, cell division, DNA replication and repair; energy transduction during photosynthesis; protein secretion and membrane fusion; translational control and regulated protein degradation; protein structure determination by crystallography and NMR spectroscopy; and protein structure prediction and enzyme design. About the Institute for Protein Design:

The Institute for Protein Design (IPD) at the University of Washington in Seattle is creating a new world of synthetic proteins to address 21st-century challenges in medicine, energy, and technology. The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes.

The Department of Biochemistry currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Engineer 1/Foldit Software Developer.

The specific field of research for this Research Engineer 1 / Foldit Software Developer is in the development of the protein folding game Foldit, which is used to crowdsource real biochemistry problems to game players. The Research Engineer 1 / Foldit Software Developer position will coordinate with the interdisciplinary Foldit team to implement, refine, test, and deploy features for the game. The position will develop in-game tools, visualizations, game mechanics and rewards, with an emphasis on support for synthetic protein design.

Develop new software features for the Foldit game, and maintain the Foldit source code.

Communicate with Foldit community to solicit and address feedback from game players.

Collaborate with other research staff, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on computational de novo protein design.

Participate in projects with uncertain outcomes requiring analysis from multiple perspectives.

Use expert knowledge and judgment to develop new methods and tools for de novo protein design challenges.

Minimum Requirements:

B.S. in computer science or equivalent experience in a programming/software engineering field + 3 months or more years of experience in related field.

Proficiency in C++

Experience with version control (preferably git)

Works well independently and in teams

Self-motivated with great organization, communication, and problem-solving skills

Desired Requirements:

Python development:

Network development

Cross-platform (Windows/macOS/Linux) development

Experience in computational protein design with Rosetta molecular design and modeling algorithms.
