The Department of Genome Sciences (GS) is part of the University of Washington School of Medicine and is comprised of 26 labs addressing leading edge questions in biology and medicine by developing and applying genetic, genomic and computational approaches taking advantage of genomic information now available for a host of species. GS is making major contributions in the application of genome science to understand the fundamentals of biology and to improve human health and wellbeing. Genome Sciences is a collaborative department supported by very different academic disciplines. We work with a multitude of Program Investigators (PIs) in departments both on the UW campus as well as worldwide. The department has gone through significant expansion since its beginning in 2001 with annual grant awards of $67M in FY17. The department has 47 training, teaching, and research faculty.

The Department of Genome Sciences currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST/ENGINEER 1.

Position Purpose:

This researcher will execute computational analyses and develop research code in the Beliveau lab. In addition to dry lab work, this person will also help interface with the experimental wet lab portion of the group.

Must be proficient coding in Python and/or a similar language such as R. Must be able to access and process genomics data from a variety of sources (eg UCSC, NCBI) and construct and deploy analysis pipelines with minimal oversight.

Responsibilities:

90%: Development and deployment of analysis code to further research projects in the lab and collaborative work.

10%: Assisting other members in the lab with basic computational tasks.

Minimum Requirements:

B.S. in Biology, Computer Science, or related area and 3+ months experience working in a laboratory/research setting.

Must be proficient coding in Python and/or a similar language such as R.

Desired Requirements:

Experience with cluster computing

Experience with machine learning

Working Conditions:

Dry lab position, 70% FTE.
