Dr. Pepple's laboratory is interested in understanding the pathogenesis of ocular inflammation, and developing new therapies to treat patients with uveitis. Uveitis is the term used to describe eye diseases caused by inflammation. Uveitis can cause blindness and impacts around 300,000 people in the United States. Dr. Pepple's lab works with animal models of uveitis to better understand this disease.

Purpose of the Research Project:

Our research program is directed at developing quantitative immunologic assays for use in animal models of uveitis that will speed the progress of mechanism discovery and drug development.

Job Description:

The Department of Ophthalmology currently has an outstanding opportunity for a RESEARCH SCIENTIST ENGINEER 1

This is the entry-level position. Candidate will perform routine scientific/engineering work, evaluating, selecting and applying standardized scientific or engineering procedures and techniques to assignments with clear, specific objectives.

Assignments will require investigation of a limited number of variables and few complex features. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of alternatives. This position requires work experience acquired at the technician level, or appropriate graduate level study. For training and development purposes, assignments may include some work that is typical of a higher level.

Candidate will work under limited supervision to complete assigned tasks/projects, demonstrating the ability to work independently. Supervisor will screen assignments for unusual or difficult problems, and select techniques and procedures to be applied to non-routine work. Incumbent will receive close supervision on new aspects of assignments.

Standard laboratory/project protocols include: PCR and gel electrophoresis; Flow cytometry; Western blot; Cell culture; Experimental animal husbandry; Performing in-vivo imaging assays; Taking tissue samples from laboratory animals for experimental procedures and entering and cataloguing data

Duties will include:

Performing specific and limited portions of broader projects, under technical guidance of an experienced scientist/engineer.

Applying standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data recognizes discrepancies in results, and follows operations through a series of related detailed steps or processes. Defines and improves practices from experiences on small projects

Conducting experiments/tests in the laboratory/field that include taking measurements and recording observations, collecting, compiling and processing data.

Contributing data/findings for use in reports, documents, or oral/written presentations.

Interacts in a collaborative manner with other team members to accomplish organizational goals; may provide ideas to improve efficiency at group level; networks primarily within own technical peer group

Learning methods for planning, including assessment of cost, scope and schedule against plan

Implementing established systems/approaches for moderately difficult tasks

Performing project related tasks providing support to on-going funding efforts

Performing assigned lab related maintenance and organizational tasks

Participating in regularly scheduled laboratory meetings and journal clubs

Meeting regularly with supervisor and/or PI to provide written and verbal updates on assigned tasks/projects.

Possibly guiding the work of peers, technicians or other support staff as necessary to achieve specific assignments.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline AND 1 year of work experience in a related field. (Equivalent education/experience can substitute for minimum qualifications except where prohibited by legal requirements such as license/certificate/registration.)

Must comply with NIH, federal, state and University regulations on the safe and ethical use of animals in research as well as other required trainings needed for job related tasks.

Knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures of a particular field of specialization

Ability to develop technical expertise and knowledge through experience and application.

Must be able to work with live animal model organisms

Must have excellent lab skills in good record-keeping, performing repetitive manual operations extremely accurately, and paying attention to detail

Ability to solve well-defined problems using accepted methods and techniques

Conditions of Employment:

Must pass WA state background check
