Aerospace/Aeronautics

Provide system engineering and technical support to ongoing programs involving military aviation systems; tactical aircraft, air-launched weapons, unmanned aerial vehicles. And cruise missiles. Conduct propulsion R&D to advance aeronautics technology and help design future systems. Define end-to-end program requirements and support design, development, fabrication, integration, and delivery of government or commercial space systems.

Algorithm Research or Development

Research and develop scientific algorithms and application software for novel RF signal exploitation and communications for the special operations and intelligence community.Conduct analyses of radar system algorithms, develop novel modeling and simulation (M&S) capabilities, and identify new algorithms for defense radar systems.

Autonomous Systems Research

Research new, prototype and develop software and algorithms or hardware to support operation of unmanned vehicles, sensors, and autonomous systems.

Biological Science

Support the Homeland Protection, Special Operations and National Heath Business Areas. Participate in a variety of research, development, and test and evaluation projects to helping to better understand naturally occurring and man made threats.

Biological, Chemical, Nuclear / Radiological Sciences

Test and evaluation, data collection and analysis, sensors & sensor system development, and laboratory management in support of research and development programs for countering chemical, explosive, radiological, and nuclear threats.

Biomechanical Research

Research in biomechanics projects including high-rate experimentation, data collection and analysis from novel sensor systems, and human model development for the purpose of increasing understanding of injury mechanisms and developing improved mitigation systems.

Chemistry

ANALYTICAL: Perform analytical chemistry tasks. Perform reactivity studies of compounds or classes of compounds. Perform various material characterization studies.

SYNTHETIC:

Support new and ongoing chemistry research projects related to national defense and homeland protection. Synthesize and characterize new molecules, polymers, and biomolecules. Develop novel synthetic and reactive concepts.

Communications Engineering

Design and develop new systems and evaluate current systems and networks; develop integrate, and evaluate satellite communications and control systems, including ground station and signal processing equipment: design, develop, and test microwave radio systems, circuits, and hardware components.

Controls Engineering

Apply modern control techniques in diverse technical areas. Examples include implementing Kalman filters in radar tracking algorithms, determining missile accuracy via estimation theory, and analyzing guidance and navigation systems. Defense systems test and evaluation Determine operating characteristics, accuracy, and reliability of ballistic weapon systems; analyze total systems as well as missile, fire control, navigation, and launcher subsystems; design and monitor test programs.

Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Research

Research physicists working in the design, implementation, and integration of equipment for radiological and nuclear threat detection, localization, and defeat to countering weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

Cybersecurity Research

Research new and define and develop customized cybersecurity solutions for complex defense systems. Participate in cyber threat definition, risk assessment, and testing of advanced defense technology.

Data Scientist

Research and develop software prototypes and innovative algorithms for analyzing large-scale and complex data (Big Data). Design and develop large-scale graph architectures to support analytic algorithms.

Digital Electronics Design Research Engineer

Research, design and prototype circuit board electronics and field programmable gate arrays for space flight instrumentation hardware and ground support equipment.

Embedded Software Research

Research, prototype and develop novel embedded software applications used for data acquisition and control in advanced RF and communication technologies.

Hardware Design Research

Develop working models of electronic systems for applications in nearly every frequency region. Included are projects in guidance, control systems, communications, signal processing, microprocessor and computer systems, antennas, circuits, advanced radars, and flight-model satellites.

Hypersonics Research

We are speeding Ahead: APL Leadership in Hypersonics as Critical as ever!APL engineers lead projects to advance the state of the art of guidance, navigation and control of these vehicles; validate the tools used to predict boundry layer transition; and investigate new materials to withstand the thermal environment.

Information Systems Research

Design systems to integrate imagery and information; data base management, network systems integration/administration. Modeling and simulation Model, analyze, and interpret test results for navigation, and guidance systems; design high-fidelity, object-oriented system simulations and prototype decision support systems; analyze requirements and effectiveness of military systems in postulated environments.

Intelligent Systems Research

Research, define and develop prototypes to address research questions and critical challenges in the area of AI, intelligent systems, including the areas of autonomy, machine learning, and brain-computer interfaces.

Mathematicians or Applied Math

Research in modelling, computational, mapping, stochastic algorithms in which you could be working on scores of projects ranging from human machine interface, sensor placement, robot control, and atmospheric and planetary modeling, etc...

Material Science

We are inventing the future of materials and devices! From areas like nano, thermal, space, biological, optics, electrical, energy. etc...

MEMS Device Design

Development of microfluidic devices, MEMS devices, carbon-nanotube optical coatings, and techniques to evaluate the security of integrated circuits.

Modeling and Simulation

Performing physics-based modeling of complex thermal-fluidic and mechanical systems. Predictive modeling and simulation of materials and engineering systems across a variety of length and time scales. Code development and statistical analysis of data. Model, analyze, and interpret test results for guidance and navigation systems. Design high-fidelity, object-oriented system simulations and prototype decision support systems. Analyze requirements and effectiveness of military systems in postulated environments.

Network/Communications Engineering

Provide engineering, evaluation, design, and implementation of communications systems to improve capabilities. Develop and test advanced communications equipment. Investigate and apply advanced computing technologies to client systems. Conduct R&D in information control environments, network management and control, and computational uncertainty. Perform system analysis, modeling and simulation for signal processing and control systems and real-time hardware/software subsystems for GPS-based positioning, navigation, & remote sensing systems. Conduct communication and networking systems engineering activities in support of Cyber Operations, Special Operations, and Homeland Protection Business Areas. Communication systems include wireless line-of-sight and satellite communications systems and networks.

Operations Research

Participate as a technical team member to understand the aspects of an operational community, develop analysis plans, develop analysis tools, conduct analyses, interpret results, and develop recommendations. Conduct mission related analysis and research activities.

Physicists

Fascinating research work to be done in so many diverse areas to include advanced science and technology development, signature energy, and materials science, alternative and trustworthy Computing, robotics and autonomy, Medicine, Optics, Quantum, Space etc...

Signal Processing Research

Provide signal processing and image analysis expertise, based on understanding of physical theory and its application to new technology development efforts. Analyze sensor design and requirements, conduct experiments to automate processing of signals and data. Process recorded sensor signals from various systems and develop new processing techniques.

Software Defined Radio Research

Research, design prototype and implement digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms for software defined radio (SDR) systems in non-traditional navigation applications and in analyzing defense systems.

Software Engineering

Research new ways to develop complex scientific software systems from design through test and validation; real-time system design; advanced, high-definition graphics display systems; interactive computer network design.

Space Physics/Planetary Science

Design space experiments in areas such as energetic particles, magnetic fields, solar effects on the atmosphere, and planetary, comet, and asteroid samplings; design experimental satellites emphasizing geophysics, navigation systems, and spacecraft stabilization.

System Engineering Research and Analysis

Determine the system needed to solve a given problem in an effective and economical way; represent systems by mathematical models for evaluation and parametric definition; integrate system parameters; perform dynamic analysis of closed-loop control systems; develop and conduct experiments with prototype components, subsystems, and total systems.

Testing and Analysis - Defense Systems

Technical research and systems analysis related to various seekers and sensors used by military tactical and irregular warfare systems, including Strike Aircraft, Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Precision Guided Munitions, land-based sensor systems and Autonomous Unmanned Systems.
