Job Description

Principal Database Administrator

Job Summary

The Principal Database Administrator designs, installs, monitors, maintains, and performance tunes production databases while ensuring high levels of data availability. This position is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software. This individual will be expected to influence, educate and mentor other more junior members of the team as well as effectively work across other levels of the organization as a champion of the DBA function and best practices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* SQL Server administration, installation, and upgrades
* Manage SQL Server databases through multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to mission-critical production systems
* Documentation of procedures, policies, relationships, and schema
* Work with the application development team to develop database architectures, coding standards, and quality assurance policies and procedures
* Design and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
* Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts
* Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues
* Monitor database system details within the database, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements
* Monitor, optimize and allocate physical data storage for database systems
* Provide 24x7 support for critical production systems, troubleshoot SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekends
* Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems
* Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases
* Perform database transaction and security audits
* Establish and document appropriate end-user database access control levels
* Develop routines for end users to facilitate best practices for database use
* Share domain and technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to other peers and team members specifically providing guidance to Database Administrator I & II team members
* Other duties as assigned

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

* Bachelors degree in Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related field
* 6 or more years of experience in database administration in high OLTP environment
* 6 or more years of experience and proficient working knowledge of Microsoft SQL servers (2008, 2012, 2014+ versions)
* 6 or more years of experience in High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL server
* 5 or more years of experience with business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) plans and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
* 5 or more years of experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools
* 2 or more years of cloud-based experience such as SQL Server in Microsoft Azure, AWS or equivalent platform
* 2 or more years of Microsoft Windows Clustering and SQL Server AlwaysOn design, maintenance and troubleshooting
* 2 or more years of experience in Agile Application Development & Scrum methodologies
* 1 or more years writing and improving SQL Server T-SQL queries
* A continuous improvement mindset is valued with a strong orientation for business process discipline
* Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, including good technical writing and interpersonal skills
* Flexible, team player, "get-it-done" personality
