Job Description

Perception is at the center of our research, as it informs our work in displays, optics, rendering, and practically everything else. As a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in the Applied Perception Science team at Facebook Reality Labs in Redmond WA, you'll be tackling the scientific challenges that define cutting-edge augmented & virtual reality, addressing heretofore-unanswered questions in vision science, perception, and displays research. This involves conducting research at the intersection of basic and applied science, as it informs our research directions and identifies opportunities for revolutions in our metrics and experiences. We're committed to a whole-system, multidisciplinary approach to perceptual research, and both collaborate with academic institutions and have opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Projects take advantage of internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering, allowing us to confront scientific questions which cannot be addressed with existing equipment. We seek a researcher who is at core an expert on visual encoding, natural scene statistics, information processing, and is passionate about doing research that helps us inform how to build efficient AR systems. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the intersection of perception science and graphics rendering, have experience in visual psychophysics, visual encoding and natural scene statistics.

The position is a fixed-term (postdoctoral) contract for 24 months and requires a PhD in Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, Bioengineering, or related field.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Conduct research on novel displays and how display parameters affect perceived image quality.

Derive novel experimental and modeling approaches to inform graphics teams on perceptually efficient image and video compression.

Employ existing knowledge of human sensory encoding and image quality metrics to help guide engineering efforts towards effective rendering solutions.

Work with cross-functional partners in research and product development to understand and prioritize perceptual research needs.

Identify possible perceptual artifacts that arise from novel architectural specifications and proposals.

Communicate the findings of experiments and modeling to help set target requirements for graphics and display systems in AR/VR.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of Vision Science, Perceptual Psychology, Computational Imaging, or related field with an emphasis on perceptual modeling, psychophysics, and/or metrics evaluating perceptual performance

Demonstrated experience in low-level spatial and temporal visual processing

Demonstrated experience working with MATLAB, Python, and/or R for stimulus display and data analysis

2+ years of training and/or experience in psychophysical and empirical behavioral measurement

Interpersonal experience: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Must be available to start employment on or after March 1, 2019

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* Experience working on the evaluation and engineering of display electronics and controllers

Specialization in understanding standard image quality metrics, and illustrated ability to derive new metrics for novel environments and/or rendering approaches

Illustrated understanding of the complete graphics pipeline through professional experience, prior internships, publications and/or academic training

Experience implementing deep learning algorithms using neural networks

3+ years in employing standard image quality metrics through academic research, industry placements or professional experience
