Responsibilities

Under general direction, the Operations Center Engineer position monitors and controls one or more mini or mainframe computers and peripheral equipment, such as printers, tape, and disk drives by operating the central console or on-line terminals.

Responsibilities:

1) Monitor Mainframe Production processing for applications including Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Financial Accounting Systems. (20%)

2) Respond appropriately to Service Desk calls by generating work tickets and assigning them to the proper support groups. (15%)

3) Respond appropriately to environmental alarms from smoke and water detection systems, CRACs (Computer Room Air Conditioners), CRAHs (Computer Room Air Handlers), and UPS units (Uninterruptible Power Supplies), and temperature sensors in several local and remote Data Center areas. (20%)

4) Report on and respond to out-of-tolerance conditions noted on Building Automation System (BAS) monitors for Campus Facilities Services. (10%)

5) Operate high-speed cut-sheet printers and call for vendor service when needed. (15%)

6) Perform basic administrative tasks on Network, Windows and/or UNIX platforms. (20%)

3) Ability to comprehend written instructions for installing computer equipment in data center rack spaces required.

Education, Experience, and Certifications

Education:

1) High School Diploma or GED required.

2) Associate Degree in Computer Science or related field preferred.

Experience:

1) Minimum five years' experience in IT Helpdesk and customer service required.

2) Minimum five years' experience in documenting job function process and procedures required.

3) Experience as Mainframe Computer Operator required.

4) Experience with monitoring software such as Metasys, CA Spectrum, StruxureWare, Nagios, or similar preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

1) Certification or pursuit such in Networking, Windows administration, Linux administration, or other related technologies preferred.

Technical Knowledge or Skills:

1) Working knowledge of basic System Administration for Windows and UNIX (or demonstrated ability to acquire same) required.

2) Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, and Visio required.

3) Writing skills sufficient to produce understandable status and problem reports required.

4) Basic knowledge of shell scripting and the command line interface for networking and/or servers preferred.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

1) Good verbal and written communication skills necessary.

2) Ability lift 50-pound printer paper boxes and computer equipment.
