Job Summary:

Location: Philadelphia, PA or Denver, CO

Responsible for the engineering, design and implementation optimization of next-generation access architectures and systems to support delivery of advanced data, voice and video services throughout Comcast systems. This individual will ensure a balance between tactical and strategic network technology engineering and design solutions that considers end-to-end business problems for optimal utilization of available network resources.

Develops and produces access network best practices via evolution of ubiquitous national engineering standards and guidelines which are fully utilized. Acts as a key contributor in a large complex network environment who can independently determine and pursue the necessary course of action to achieve results. Frequently leads teams on specific projects providing broad technical direction and expertise. Usually determines own work priorities. Acts as technical liaison between NGAN and field engineering SMEs and acts as senior technical resource POC for both field partners and / or internal colleagues.

NGAN Access Engineer will actively engage with Technology, Field Operations, and Network Operations departments within NGAN to define initial deployment standards for new technologies and platforms and document best practices; assist with assessment of new technology solutions and equipment evaluations

The NGAN access engineer will assist with selection of best-fit access solutions that meet NGAN deployment targets across multiple lines of business. This position demands excellent understanding of key access technologies and services including coaxial and fiber transmission media, Distributed Access Architectures (DAA), DOCSIS protocols, EPON, Metro Ethernet, Cell Back Haul, EoHFC, DWDM, CWDM, CCAP and DPoE platforms.

Core Responsibilities:

* Provide Comcast regions and divisions with technical engineering to guide the integration of next-generation technologies and solutions into Comcast access networks that support deployment of new products and services. Ensure compliance and clear communications of access network strategies.
* Work with the NGAN, Technology, Field Operations, Network Operations, and Capacity departments to define deployment standards and document best practices. Work with EPS, Business Unit, divisional and regional engineering teams, and vendor teams to select best-fit platform solutions and equipment. Be an active contributor to the cross-functional project planning process to support access technology trials and early deployments. Assist in the development of trial plans and use cases
* Act as subject matter expert to Division and Field Regional engineering teams to ensure wide dissemination of national technical standards and policies, collect and consolidate field equipment and plant issues and concerns, drive development of joint solutions with National engineering teams, and incorporate relevant developments into architectural templates and practices.
* Provide recommendations, design and implementation guidance associated with new services and features to Comcast Residential and Commercial Services teams. This includes supporting development of new business, transport engineering, network engineering, video engineering, and engineering operations.
* Partner with access technology vendors and Purchasing teams to drive standard product configurations, simplify product offerings, and evaluate new solutions for residential and commercial applications
* Lead cross-functional teams during development, selection and deployment of new architectures, technologies or vendor platforms. Ensure that teams stay on track to meet national objectives and priorities.
* Experience and understanding of passive and active CWDM/DWDM fiber access and HFC architectures
* Working hands-on experience on EPON / DPOE technologies.
* Design, engineer and support in optical, ethernet and RF based access technologies (HFC Metro Ethernet & DAA)
* Excellent understanding of Docsis protocols including OFDM(A) - D3.1
* Proficient in writing guidelines/documentation, perform business analysis on spreadsheets and able to communicate concepts to large cross functional groups
* Able to work as a team internally and externally with vendors.
* Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Job Specification:

* Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent.
* Generally, requires 7-11 years related experience
* Experience in access technologies including design, deployment, engineering and operations. Exposure to EPON, DWDM, and other transport technologies a must. Must be familiar with current industry trends & STD
* Good understanding of current Comcast end-to-end service deployment and provisioning processes.
* Demonstrated ability to work with cross-functional teams; must be able to multi-task in a demanding and deadline-driven environment with minimum supervision
* Strong oral and written communications a must. Experience in critical thinking is crucial to this position.
* Must possess strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills (process flows, analysis, measurements, and quality improvement methodologies). Must be able to perform basic business case analyses /calculations, and to compare opportunity costs and benefits between different alternatives
* Experience and understanding of passive and active CWDM/DWDM fiber access and HFC architectures
* Working physical hands-on experience on EPON / DPOE technologies ideal but not pre-requisite.
* Able to design, engineer and support optical ethernet and RF based access technologies (Metro E & DAA)
* Excellent understanding of Docsis protocols including OFDM(A) - Docsis 3.0 and 3.1
* Proficient in writing guidelines/documentation, perform business analysis on spreadsheets and able to communicate concepts to large cross functional groups
* Able to work as a team internally and externally with vendors.
* Willingness to travel as needed; typical travel will be up to 30%.
