For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for an experienced computer scientist with a background in cybersecurity with emphasis on network security. You will provide leadership and subject matter expertise in the area of cybersecurity for critical infrastructure systems and civilian networks. You will participate in strategy and business development for the Cyber and Infrastructure Resilience (CIR) program in the Global Security (GS) Principal Associate Directorate. This position is programmatically in GS's E Program and administratively will report to the payroll supervisor of the hiring organization.

This position will be filled at either the SES.4 or SES.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

* Lead and support a diverse range of highly complex research projects requiring in-depth analysis and creative use of innovative methods in network mapping and characterization, partnering with senior management and organizations across the Laboratory.
* Oversee growth of existing and development of new network security capabilities at LLNL.
* Provide subject matter expertise in characterization and analysis of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) networks.
* Identify new applications and opportunities for network security capability growth and help create vision and technical direction in this thrust area, working with program leadership.
* Develop new program growth opportunities through interactions with current and potential sponsors and the development of research proposals.
* Test and validate new OT network characterization tools, working with LLNL's cyber-physical testbed team.
* Develop, analyze, parse, reverse engineer and model network protocols.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition, at the SES.5 Level

* Guide and provide scientific and technical direction for a portfolio of highly complex technical tasks and projects that consistently require the application of creativity and innovation; set broad research/project vision and strategy and influence technical direction for Laboratory, self and/or others wielding extensive influence with senior management and policy makes.
* Provide highly innovative solutions to abstract complex problems/ideas, convert them into useable algorithms/software modules, and provide solutions that require in-depth analysis of multiple factors and the creative use of established methods.
* Responsible for high-level goal setting, strategic planning, directing and accomplishing project/program goals and objectives significantly impacting major Laboratory programs and contributing to the revolutionary advancement of knowledge.

Qualifications

* Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
* Extensive computer networking knowledge, including common protocols such as TCP/IP, SSL/TLS, HTTP, DNS, DNP3, ModBus, IEC 104, IEC 61850.
* Significant experience with public key and symmetric encryption protocols, such as RSA and AES.
* Demonstrated expertise in using tools such as Wireshark, tcpdump, Nmap, Snort, Metasploit, Burp Suite, and/or Nessus.
* Subject matter expert understanding of and experience in control systems, OT and ICS/SCADA security.
* Advanced aptitude of various types of vulnerabilities, exploits, cyber attacks malware.
* Expert experience in communication network protocol development parsing, reverse engineering, and modeling.
* Demonstrated ability to effectively lead teams and create technical direction and vision, write research proposals and secure sponsor funding.
* Expert ability to communicate comprehensive knowledge effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and to non-cyber experts and proficient interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate and lead in a team environment.

In Addition, at the SES.5 Level

* Expert knowledge of state-of-the-art technologies in network security and protocols.
* Extensive experience and demonstrated ability to plan the integration and implementation of new programs and/or operational best practices.
* Extensive project leadership experience and demonstrated ability to apply, lead and develop cutting-edge principles and research, work independently while effectively managing concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.

Desired Qualifications:

* Ph.D. degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field and several years of relevant experience.
* Significant experience in one or more languages (C++/C/Java/Python/JavaScript/bash). Knowledge of one or more of the following computer science disciplines: parallel programming, embedded systems, high performance computing, scientific data analysis, machine learning, systems programming, software engineering, and big data technologies.
* Demonstrated ability to secure sponsor funding through winning proposals and sponsor relationships. Previous experience working Department of Energy, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense or utility company.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
