The Digital Media Lab Consortium is a collaboration between the Department of Film & Media, the Department of Art Practice, and the Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies in the College of Letters and Science, division of Arts and Humanities at UC Berkeley. The DML Consortium is dedicated to academic collaborations, teaching, and research in digital media production and related forms and technologies.
The Media Lab Coordinator is responsible for administering an instructional video editing lab, providing desktop user support and workshops, maintaining an inventory of video production equipment in Dwinelle Hall for student use within the Digital Media Lab Consortium of three above departments.
Video Production, Equipment Circulation, Maintenance, and Instruction:
* Manage new and existing video and post-production equipment for student and faculty use.
* Provide computer lab users with technical support and training necessary to accomplish academic and research-related tasks.
* Research and recommend equipment purchases.
* Maintain and service cameras, tripods, lighting kits, audio gear, expendables and other production accessories.
* Maintain checkout system for circulating production equipment.
* Assist classroom instructors teaching technical skills by creating and delivering instructional workshops and tutorials on video equipment and software in response to student and instructor needs.
* Facilitate student video production work by providing expertise.
* Provide daily support via phone email or direct contact with users.
* Check hardware and software regularly; maintain server and data storage for student network accounts.
* Update software and operating systems as needed.
* Create user accounts and passwords for all lab users.
* Create and maintain a networked lab with server and media storage.
* Maintain legal licenses for all installed software.
* Delete obsolete or inappropriate files, programs and viruses on all computers.
* Make sure all computers are properly powered, networked, and clean.
* Make sure all peripherals are properly wired; perform hardware maintenance tasks.
* Setup and maintain keypad door locks, including assigning codes to users.
* Maintain and service projectors and related accessories; ensure smooth operation of all non-teaching aspects of media labs, and alert staff and faculty to anticipated needs, such as equipment replacement, security issues, etc.
* Provide daily support via phone email or direct contact with users.
* Provide infrastructure management, including but not limited to the following: establish relationships with vendors to smoothly resolve issues relating to repairs, purchases, and refunds, thus inculcating a functional life-cycle for resource management.
* Research and recommend new software, production equipment, computing and post-production equipment, lab / classroom upgrades, and advise colleagues and DML members.
* Provide lab users with technical support and training necessary to accomplish academic and research-related tasks.
* Ensure operational and functional health of digital media labs and resources, including audio/visual classroom technologies.
* Work with DML departments to maintain shared AV/IT resources.
* Provides administrative/strategic planning support, including but not limited to the following: help plan and implement studio development and classroom technology.
* As a member of Digital Media Lab Executive Committee, recommend strategies and budget planning.
* Researches, analyzes, and evaluates industry standards and best practices for lab usage, production equipment, and classroom facilities.
* Ability and interest in working in a liberal-arts educational context, with students and instructors who have a wide range of technical skill levels, in a range of pedagogical contexts.
* Working knowledge of and ability to instruct students on the following: video camera operation, audio recording, lighting for camera, photography, and basic roles for a film production crew.
* Working knowledge of and ability to instruct students on the following software:
* ProTools, Final Cut Pro X, Adobe CC: Premiere Pro, Media Encoder, Encore, After Effects, Audition, Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, and various other software for art and design as needed.
* Working knowledge of and ability to instruct students on best practices for media management, organization, video compression, codecs, file types, and current trends in digital media.
* Ability to operate various computer platforms and IT services for video editing such as: Mac OS, iOS, windows, FTP, networking, and Mac Server. Install, configure, and upgrade software and operating systems as needed.
* Audio / Visual technology skills for projection, including: video projection, speakers, classroom technology, performance, and installation.
* Knowledge of sound design technologies for film and theatre.
* Advanced knowledge of audio / video control systems, signal flow, and cabling.
* Basic knowledge of electrical skills for lighting (circuit breakers, power distribution).
* Ability to perform minor repairs and maintenance of video production equipment.
* Strong creativity and problem solving skills to apply principles, practices, and procedures within discipline to complete difficult assignments.
* Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information in a clear and concise manner.
* Bachelor's degree in related area/or equivalent experience/training
* Additional skills with 16mm and celluloid film, studio art, professional experience, academic experience, teaching experience.
Salary & Benefits
The position is non-exempt, bi-weekly paid position. Hourly pay for this role is commensurate with experience within the range of $26.75 - $32.28.
