Job Description

Job Summary

Manages the architecture function and helps lead research and development (R&D) activities. Responsible for researching, analyzing, designing, defining, and proposing requirements-based solutions that are appropriate for business and technology strategies. Partner with stakeholders within the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago (FRBC) and across the Federal Reserve System (FRS) to craft highly scalable, flexible, and resilient architectures that address customer business problems and accelerate the adoption of FRS IT products. Support stakeholders in developing iterative, incremental solutions using traditional data-center and cloud-based technologies (e.g., AWS, etc.) to run practical experiments on emerging technologies. Serves as a subject matter expert (SME) to business and IT groups in planning architectures for systems under design and development. Works on highly complex products that require in-depth knowledge across multiple technical areas and business units. Makes hiring decisions. Provides work direction and guidance to staff. The level of work is considered advanced and staff must work under minimal supervision. This position has direct reports.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Leads the creation, evolution, and vision of the architecture function, including coordination of an appropriately balanced pursuit of enterprise, business, information, technical, and solution architectures


* Supports team in efforts to build and sustain innovation, research, and development initiatives and processes that assist in the evaluation and running of practical experiments on emerging technologies that may benefit the business


* Leads the identification and analysis of business drivers to develop portfolio level architectural requirements


* Analyzes technology industry and market trends and determines potential impact on the enterprise


* Promotes the development and practical use of standards and patterns to facilitate efficiency and interoperability of business and technology services


* Develops, manages, and forecasts capacity requirements based on business needs and IT infrastructure growth capacity


* Facilitates the development of policies to ensure that technology portfolio is used efficiently and consistently


* Ensures that capacity workload modeling and availability analysis is performed for various platforms and environments


* Ensures reliability and availability of platforms to meet business objectives


* Communicates complex technical subjects to various audiences


* Guides, mentors, motivates, and develops direct reports to assist in their professional growth and development


* Provides goals for staff, conducts performance reviews and career management assistance


* Assists in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring of new talent


* Presents to management and leadership technology trends analysis and recommendations


* Maintains business acumen by balancing perspective on how various environmental business and technology factors may influence or impact portfolio level technology architecture


* Ensures that architecture and technology documentation is maintained and well aligned to corresponding business information


* Represents the department in FRS level efforts


* May be engaged with industry level work (ex. standards, industry engagement, etc.)

Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related field or equivalent work experience


* Minimum of 10 years of experience in multiple technology disciplines.


* 5 years in enterprise and/or systems architecture


* 3 years managing staff and cross-functional teams

* Demonstrated excellence in project management skills and attention to detail


* Excellent written and verbal communication skills


* Strong presentation skills required


* Exceptional analytical skills and proven ability to apply, interpret and explain complex technical subjects


* A strong leader with demonstrated ability to manage staff, build teams and coalitions


* Possesses and applies both specific and broad knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of the field of specialization to the completion of assignments
