Manager, Engineering (Data Server)

What you'll be doing…

You will be enabling, building and leading a team of great engineers that create, run and maintain services that help our customers shorten the time and effort needed to go from their questions to the data they need to answer those questions; the data they need to analyze. From defining data models to data virtualization to data cataloguing, the Data Server team builds and runs services that are the backbone of Tableau's platform for analytics data. As part of the Data Server team you will help the team set bold goals, create plans to achieve those goals and serve our customers. You will be responsible for building and mentoring a great team. You will work with other leaders across our Data organization and across Tableau to understand customer requirements and build components and services for the long haul.

Some of the things you'll be doing include…

* Provide technical leadership to the team, looking out for performance, reliability, instrumentation and monitoring
* Collaborate with other teams, because our work frequently spans multiple feature teams
* Design, code, and test features alongside your team
* Improve and drive our development practices to measurably and sustainably deliver high software quality and engineering productivity
* Respond to urgency rapidly, while keeping work fun
* Influence others and garner cross-functional support through verbal, video, and written communications
* Demonstrate strong personal values and a commitment to our mission, our people and customers
* Hire and grow a team of fantastic software engineers

Who you are…

* Experienced. You have 5+ years of experience managing engineering teams and you have hands on technical experience building, deploying and maintaining software and services.
* Highly Technical. You know engineering. You're skilled at architecting systems for scale, reliability and performance.
* You are a collaborative hands-on manager.
* Technically Savvy. You understand the industry and are willing to learn from the best and drive your infrastructure to be better.
* A Problem Solver. Easily adaptable to change and apply creative problem solving skills to unforeseen challenges.
* A multi-tasker who can function effectively in a fast paced environment.
* A strong communicator with the ability to work well within a diverse multicultural environment and with varying levels of management.
* You know how to bring out the best in those around you, with minimal fuss.
* Self-Motivated. You do good work, and lots of it. The drive to deliver is just a part of you.
* A servant leader who supports others to new heights. You get big satisfaction by building teams that deliver high quality to customers with minimal waste.
* A B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent experience is preferred.
