Job Description

Job Summary: The Embedded Applications Group of the Space Exploration Sector needs an experienced leader for a team of real-time and embedded software engineers building flight systems for our Civil Space and National Security Space missions.

Duties:

* Technical Contributor. Design, implement and test software to solve problems in a variety of embedded environments, with an emphasis on modular reuse and modular architectures; maintain the catalog of institutional reusable flight software libraries; contribute to technology evaluation, technology plans, and future group roadmaps.
* Leader and Mentor. Grow a team of software engineers by providing development opportunities, mentoring, coaching, and encouraging an inclusive environment of innovation and creativity. Contribute to vision and goals, future improvements, business directions, and staff planning.
* Team Player. Work with technical experts at APL to research, advance, and advocate for emerging, impactful architectural concepts (like multi-processor architectures, space cyber, telecommunications protocols, intelligent storage, etc.).
* Technical Reviewer. Review software processes and procedures; perform software quality reviews, proposal reviews, and overview of publications and presentations by members of the section.

Required Qualifications:

* Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or other related field.


* 5-10 years of experience in software engineering, preferably full lifecycle (requirements development through deployment / operational support).


* Passion for developing and mentoring technical staff, and nurturing a trusting and inclusive work environment.


* Ability to communicate system-level solutions and technical direction, both to government sponsors and to team members.


* Strong interpersonal skills, initiative, and independent follow-through.



Desired Qualifications:

* Demonstrated experience leading teams in full software development life cycle.


* Familiarity with flight software libraries, applications, and frameworks.


* Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field.


* Experience in cost estimation, business, and/or proposal development.


* An existing Top Secret/SCI security clearance.
