Job Description

As a lead quantum engineer for computational modeling you will lead a team responsible for developing scalable and efficient simulation software. Working intimately with our research department, you will be responsible for improving our quantum hardware simulation tools, contributing both to internal and external research software, and shaping how the industry will practice quantum hardware design and modeling.

Rigetti Computing is building the world's most powerful computers to help solve humanity's most pressing and important problems. These systems will perform computations that today's fastest supercomputers are incapable of- unlocking entirely new classes of problems and offering a direct path to solutions. We are scientists, engineers, builders, and visionaries. We believe quantum computing is going to significantly affect health care, how we treat disease, how we generate energy, and how we feed humanity. Rigetti is the only company deploying full-stack solutions for hybrid classical/quantum computing. Our 16-qubit quantum computer is available online through our Quantum Cloud Services platform, and the first commercially useful applications are already under exploration.

Job Responsibilities

* Lead a team of physicists and software engineers focused on building simulation tools
* Work with research teams to develop scalable numerical simulation workflows to complement experimental and theoretical efforts
* Write efficient, production-quality numerical code that can be deployed on individual laptops or cloud-based HPC systems
* Contribute to research and development of domain-specific model reduction techniques
* Coordinate the efforts of the team focused on computational modeling

Preferred Qualifications

* Strong software engineering skills in at least one typed language suitable for high performance computing, and basic familiarity with the Julia programming language
* Strong formal mathematical skills, specifically linear algebra and analysis
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially on technical subjects
* Demonstrated ability to convert technical ideas into products
* Ph.D. in a technical area such as physics or applied math, or equivalent industry research and development experience

Nice-to-haves:

* Demonstrated contribution to open source software
* Knowledge of computational modeling of any of the following:
* quantum systems;
* tensor networks;
* integrated/lumped element electrical circuits;
* electromagnetic modeling;
* partial differential equations;
* nonlinear optimization problems;
* optimal control problems
* Experience with parallel computing paradigms such as CUDA, OpenCL, OpenMP or MPI
* Prior exposure to circuit quantization methods (e.g., canonical quantization, black-box quantization)
* Experience with meta-programming and creating domain specific languages
* Interest in a creative field, such as visual, written, or performing arts
* Curiosity

ABOUT RIGETTI

Rigetti Computing is a full-stack quantum computing company based in Berkeley and Fremont, CA. We design and manufacture superconducting quantum integrated circuits. We package and deploy those chips in a low-temperature environment, and we build control systems to perform quantum logic operations on them. We build software to integrate our systems directly into existing cloud infrastructure.

Our product, Quantum Cloud Services, is the world's first full-stack programming and execution environment for quantum/classical computing. QCS includes Quil (quantum instruction language), our programming standard for quantum/classical computing.

We were founded by Chad Rigetti in 2013, and today employ over 100 people, about 40 of whom hold PhDs in physics, computer science, math, chemistry or engineering.
