About Smarkets

Job Description

About Smarkets

Smarkets is a Python and Erlang technology company based in central London. We've built one of the world's largest betting exchanges, also known as a prediction market, with significantly better odds than the competition. Our strength is technology and trading with a passion to push the known boundaries of real-time financial technology.

We're a growing team of over 100, boasting more than 30 nationalities, and our platform has handled over £3 billion of bets since launching in 2010, allowing us to become one of the most profitable companies per employee in Europe.

Our mission is to disrupt one of the oldest industries in the world by rethinking the method and model of the betting business. We think traditional sports betting rips off bettors, taking up to a 15% margin on bets. We offer the industry's lowest margin of around 2%. We can and will do better.

We're building a reliable, low-latency, highly concurrent system capable of scaling to thousands of executions per second with sub-millisecond latency. Whether you want to work on the exchange platform, the front-end or trading mechanisms, you'll be solving real and challenging problems - from pushing Python performance to new heights to handling real-time design constraints.

This is not a traditional DevOps role, involving a fusion between DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering. In fact, our Infrastructure Engineers should not maintain systems but write code and tools to take care of it instead.

Responsibilities

  • Help make our infrastructure more automated, flexible and robust
  • Write robust, high-performance code, usually Python
  • Write and code individual programs according to specifications
  • Refine our CI system and release process
  • Collaborate with developers to solve system related problems
  • Examine existing software and determine requirements for new/modified systems in light of business needs
  • Write operational documentation and providing support and training for users

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Software development experience within an infrastructure context
  • Strong programming knowledge
  • Expert Unix skills
  • Experience with configuration management tools, such as Ansible and Chef
  • Working knowledge of cloud platforms
  • Familiarity with a scripting language, like Bash, Python
  • Experience operating in a Linux environment
  • Able to determine requirements for new/modified systems in the light of business needs
  • Experience in and willingness to test and correct software programs
  • Distributed systems design experience
  • Solid understanding of network

Bonus

  • Working knowledge of AWS
  • Solid understanding of system security

Perks

  • Self-management structure similar to Valve
  • Uncapped holiday
  • Flexible work environment
  • Sit-stand desks with wheels
  • Catered meals, drinks, socials on a frequent basis
  • Central London office
  • Work with some of Europe's smartest software engineers
