Job Description

This role is for a Linux system administrator with skills in orchestration, containers, and virtualization. The selected individual will participate in the design, development, and advancement of the high-performance computing (HPC) environment of the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility (ALCF). In addition, they will assist with implementation, management, and administration of experimental and production networks. This person will contribute ideas to the design and development of new systems and network tools. The focus of this position will be on containers and virtualization technologies compatible with the environment.

Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where "dream teams" of world- class researchers work alongside experts from industry, academia and other government laboratories to address vital national challenges in clean energy, environment, technology and national security.

Position Requirements

* Bachelor's and 4+ years experience, some occupations may require graduate degree and 2+ years.
* Knowledge and experience in administration of large Linux installations, with emphasis on Red Hat and SuSE, on the scale of hundreds of systems
* Provisioning, management, and orchestration with automation tools such as Salt and Ansible
* Fundamental system administration knowledge such as networking; networked file systems, including NFS; and tools and languages, such as Perl, Python, C, and shell scripts
* Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
* Flexibility in handling assignments and working on several projects simultaneously

Desirable Skills:

* Good knowledge of parallel and cluster file systems such as Lustre and GPFS
* Understanding of MPI implementations such as MPICH and LAMS
* Good familiarity with the hardware and software of mass storage systems. (100TB RAID arrays through 150PB distributed filesystems)
* Knowledge of high-performance networking technologies such as Infiniband and Omni-Path
* Knowledge of high-performance computing techniques
* Knowledge of scientific visualization techniques
* Flexibility in handling assignments and working on several projects simultaneously
* Experience with container technologies such as Docker, OpenShift, and Kubernetes
* Familiarity with relational database management system concepts
* Understanding of authentication and authorization technologies such as LDAP, PAM, RADIUS, and SSSD.
