Job Description

The Chemical and Biological Defense Systems Group develops systems, advanced technology and rapid prototypes to counter threat proliferation, and to rapidly detect and attribute threat events as well as enabling threat impact mitigation and recovery. The Group's emphasis spans the chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives threat space. Principal sponsors are the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. The work of this Group is highly interdisciplinary and agile; as a result, the backgrounds of the researchers and program teams are diverse and offer many opportunities for the development of new skill sets. Rigorous systems analyses are used to produce system architectures and recommend research areas to guide government investment. These analyses are grounded by modeling and simulation of threats, operationally realistic characterization efforts, and evaluation of defense capabilities. Where needed, advanced technology development, rapid prototyping, and testing is conducted, which often requires experimentation in both laboratory and operational settings. Experimentation spans across the evaluation of existing methods, novel method development, method and technology integration, and evaluation and optimization of full systems. Research is often coordinated with inputs from stakeholder communities such that results map to operational requirements.

The candidate will assist staff members in troubleshooting server, application software and networking problems. They will support engineers and scientists by assisting in the procurement, setup and support of IT infrastructure. Example development environments include VMware, NetApp, and sensors which may depend on a combination of Windows and Linux platforms. In addition they will assist with software configuration management and security vulnerability remediation on laboratory networks.

Candidates must be detail oriented, able to multi-task, work with minimal supervision and work well with staff and management. Strong problem solving skills will be required to come up with innovative solutions to challenging problems. Occasional travel to field sites is required.

Requirements:

* Must be a student currently enrolled in the pursuit of an undergraduate (BA/BS/BE) degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or similar scientific discipline
* Familiarity with wireless and mobile systems
* Experience with Windows and/or Linux operating systems
* Basic understanding of networking and PC maintenance
* Excellent time management and an interest in supporting developers

An ideal candidate will have:

* Experience with network systems such as NAS and servers
* IT Security best practices
* PC and software troubleshooting
* Understanding of cloud-based systems
* Preferred GPA 3.5 or higher
