Job Description

The New York Times Magazine is seeking a creative front-end technologist/designer to join our award-winning design team and craft rich story experiences.

This technologist/designer will be responsible for executing a wide range of projects, from single interactive modules to innovative multimedia features that experiment with emerging technologies and storyforms.

Candidates will have portfolios that demonstrate technical proficiency, solid understanding of visual design, and a smart UX sensibility. Experience with motion design, video, audio, photography and/or game mechanics is a plus. Candidates are expected to be quick learners with creative ideas and have the proven ability to work collaboratively. Original, flexible, critical thinkers who communicate and collaborate well with a wide range of contributors and stakeholders will thrive.

This role will support and receive significant guidance from the magazine's digital art director.

Requirements:

* 5+ years of front-end/design experience.


* Expertise in client-side Web development across multiple platforms, including Javascript, HTML and CSS.


* Experience with Javascript frameworks/libraries.


* Fluency with LESS/SASS preprocessors.


* Experience with NodeJS and back-end templating systems.


* Strong visual & interactive design skills - a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior.


* Familiarity with Git.


* Good software architecture skills to produce well-organized, efficient code.


* Demonstrated ability to understand, apply and expand predetermined visual directions to different formats and platforms.


* Ability to collaborate with colleagues of different backgrounds and widely-ranging technical levels.


* Demonstrated ability to envision and direct the creation of presentations that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text.


* Extreme attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.


* Positive attitude taking on all parts of a project, from production to delivery.


* Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to a sometimes unpredictable production environment.


* Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may occasionally include nights or weekends.


* A keen interest in narrative and visual storytelling, in journalism, and in the publishing industry at large. Familiarity with competitors and also the new challenges and opportunities created by the changing media landscape.
