Introduction: The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Estimation and Modeling Analyst

Job Summary: Opportunity to work with a talented and motivated team of analysts on problems vital to long-term national security. Engage in system-level accuracy analysis of the nation's most complex and significant strategic deterrent, the Trident Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM). Acquire subject matter expertise and contribute deep understanding of the current weapon system and future variants, including the Life Extension missile and the successor submarine. Evaluate tactically representative test flight data and assess performance characteristics of unique functional domains, such as demonstrated accuracy, submarine navigation, missile guidance, warhead deployment and reentry and weapons effects. Conduct system engineering investigations and special studies of accuracy concerns. Innovate and implement statistical estimation and physics-based analysis methodologies as needed.

Duties:

* Perform special studies of accuracy and conduct systems engineering investigations. (30%)
* Cumulative accuracy evaluation in support of SSP and STRATCOM (20%)
* Analysis of Trident Test flights (15%)
* Methodology development and software implementation (15%)
* Methodology and analysis results documentation (15%)
* Present analysis results (5%)

Required Qualifications: PhD degree in applied math, statistics, physics, engineering, or related discipline. Demonstrated ability to perform statistical estimation, quantitative evaluation, and/or physics-based modeling in support of assignments in above areas. Demonstrated ability to perform scientific programming using a high-level language, such as C , in support of same. Good written and oral communication skills. Must be able to work effectively with all levels of staff, external collaborators and sponsors

Desired Qualifications: Experience in any of the following--maximum likelihood estimation, strategic weapon system accuracy analysis or aided inertial navigation error analysis.

Special Working Conditions: Occasional travel for meetings, conferences, and field support.

Security: Secret Clearance is required. Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for a NAC/LAC (National Agency Check/Local Agency Check) and access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
