Job Description

Company Overview

Expanse helps IT operations and security teams discover, manage, and secure all of their global internet assets. Current Expanse customers comprise more than 10 percent of the routable internet and they use the company's platform to monitor for real-time changes to their infrastructure. Using leading-edge collection and analysis technology, Expanse improves organizations' visibility, governance, and IT operations, reducing risk associated with internet-connected assets and enabling a secure digital transformation. Founded in 2012, Expanse is headquartered in San Francisco and is now backed by more than $135M in funding.

Position Summary

We're looking for an experienced engineering manager to lead our Behavior feature team here at Expanse. Our feature teams are responsible for building and delivering our customer-facing product lines (such as Expander and Behavior), building on top of the capabilities provided by our platform teams. The engineers on these teams are driven by both our overarching mission of making the internet a safer place for our customers and by the opportunity to build a seamless data-rich product experience for our users.

Do you come into work in the morning thinking about how you can better enable your team? Do you thrive on translating complicated datasets into intuitive user experiences? Do you take pride in helping teams find the right balance of predictability and agility? Are you attracted by the opportunity to work in a start-up environment where the things you build will be the foundation of the company for years to come? If so, read on.

All of these elements are important, but there's a reason we mention enabling the team first: it's the sin qua non for this role. You'll be leading a team with a broad set of skillsets who come together to deliver on common goals; one of the critical aspects of this job will be supporting, coaching and developing your team members. We're also growing fast, so hiring effectively will be critical as well.

The key challenges this team faces are around being connected to customer needs and delivering improvements that matter to our customers. Additionally, the feature teams collectively own the technical vision for evolving and improving our serving tier. You'll support the team with your personal product vision and drive for product excellence, and by contributing at an architectural level to our serving strategy.

Engineering managers at Expanse work closely with their Product Management counterparts to define the vision and roadmap for the products they own and then lead their respective team's execution against those targets. Two of the most important ingredients we've found that lead to strong execution are an effective agile process, tailored to the needs of the team, and an ability to hold high standards whilst still being intensely pragmatic.

This role will be heavily shaped by Expanse's rapid growth. Our engineering team has grown by about 50% in the last 6 months and we expect to continue to grow rapidly. This means you'll have an opportunity to have huge impact; you'll need to be comfortable bringing order out of some of the chaos that inevitably comes from this sort of growth.

If this sounds like it might be your cup of tea (or coffee - we have that too), we'd love to get in touch and share more about the role.
