Engineering Manager - Ad Quality

Job Description

The Ad Quality team leverages deep expertise in areas like search relevance, machine learning, and market dynamics to drive the majority of Yelp's revenue through ads connecting users with great local businesses. We are looking for an innovative leader to grow the team at Yelp, delivering better monetization of Yelp's traffic and content while also protecting our great user experience via advanced relevance and targeting.

We have hundreds of millions of pieces of user-contributed content, millions of users and business listings, and hundreds of thousands of advertising customers. You'll harness the value of this data, deduce relationships between variables, and drive huge impacts to Yelp's core business. You should be passionate about Yelp's business, focused on growing effective and enthusiastic engineering teams, and skilled at guiding long-term roadmaps in line with our product vision.

What You Will Do:

* Lead a team of machine learning and data infrastructure engineers working on complex technical problems.
* Partner closely with other engineering and product teams to align priorities and ensure project execution.
* Coach and mentor engineers of all experience levels, from new graduates to senior engineers, while providing frequent and constructive feedback.
* Provide technical guidance and act as a sounding board on ML or data infrastructure projects, while rolling up your sleeves to code alongside your team when needed.
* Identify new opportunities to utilize our advertising platform to optimize the trade-offs between the interests of Yelp, our users, and our customers.
* Drive the hiring process for your team, by working with our Engineering Recruiting group to ensure your team has the skills and staffing needed to meet our aggressive business goals.
* Foster and grow a fun, diverse and inclusive culture that reflects Yelp's values.

We Are Looking For:

* Previous experience as a manager of an engineering team.
* A thoughtful, deliberative, and emotionally grounded leader.
* An excellent communicator, both in person and in technical writing.
* Deep expertise working with data infrastructure or machine learning, and enough experience with both to bring them together in impactful systems.
* The ability to balance near term product benefits with longer term research/infrastructure investments.
* A passion for crafting and fostering good engineering practices while growing engineers into leaders.
* Deep understanding of your favorite modern programming language: Python, Ruby, Java, C++, whatever works…Comfort working in a Linux environment.
