Job Description

Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join our multidisciplinary team of analysts supporting Laboratory programs such as Chemical/Biological/Explosives Security, Nuclear Threat Reduction, Intelligence Programs, and Energy/Infrastructure Security. You will apply a combination of technical depth and breadth, critical thinking, modeling and simulation, and analysis to understand complex, multi-domain problem areas and provide decision insight, communicate options and trade-offs, and facilitate the integration of new technology in support of customer missions. You will also have the freedom to explore your own research interests. These positions are in the Computational Engineering Division (CED), within the Engineering Directorate.

Essential Duties

* Research, design, and implement solutions requiring analysis and creative use of innovation methods to complex problems by collaborating with scientists and researchers across a variety of technical disciplines.
* Create analytical frameworks and evaluate competing characteristics to determine solutions that most effectively meet stakeholder objectives.
* Develop, evaluate, and apply physical and computational simulation to gain insight into complex systems.
* Communicate complex technical concepts to stakeholders in a concise effective way.
* Document research by publishing papers and/or presenting within the sponsor community and at conferences.
* Contribute to research proposals, including proposal presentations and preparation of proposals that will provide future research opportunities in the field.
* Participate in the establishment of future research directions.
* Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to define and carry out the research.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

* Recent PhD in Engineering or Physical, Biological, or Computer Sciences, or a related field.
* Demonstrated background and experience in one or more of the following areas: modeling and simulation, risk analysis, data analytics, chemical and biological security, explosives, intelligence analysis, cyber security, radiological and nuclear security, energy systems, and infrastructure protection.
* Demonstrated experience applying analysis, modeling, and simulation tools to inform decision making and/or policy making.
* Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a multi-disciplinary research team, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.
* Demonstrated initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications

* Experience programming in Python, C/C++, Java, R, or Matlab.
* Ability to manage multiple parallel tasks and priorities of customers and stakeholders to ensure deadlines are met.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires either no security clearance, or a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level or Q-level clearance depending on the location of the assignment.

If you are selected and a security clearance is required, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. L and Q-level clearances require U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a one year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
