Description

The Director of Networking and Systems Administration reports to the Vice President for Information Technology/CIO and serves as a key member of the Information Technology division and its leadership team. The primary purpose of this position is leadership of a team of professionals with comprehensive responsibility for the support and management of Stevens' enterprise network, communication systems, and core computing infrastructure. Support for information technology at Stevens is integrated across academic and administrative areas, primarily centralized in nature, and driven by a commitment to excellence. Areas under the responsibility of Networking and Systems Administration include networking and communications, server administration, system and network security, and support for research computing.

The primary responsibilities of this position are operational management, strategic planning, and leadership; technological knowledge and experience alone are completely insufficient for success in this position. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping to shape the vision for information technology at Stevens. The Director must have a broad knowledge of academic and administrative information technologies, with the ability to think and plan strategically regarding future technology initiatives and architectures. The selected candidate must be capable of working in a dynamic organization and must be committed to teamwork and excellence. Excellent leadership, teambuilding, and collaboration are fundamental requirements for success in this position.

Responsibilities

In functioning within this role, the DNSA will have four overarching responsibilities:

* Development and leadership of a staff of IT professionals working together as a high performance, cohesive team, within a collaborative divisional culture dedicated to excellence and user centricity.
* Operational management of a high-demand, mission-critical IT infrastructure, including disaster recovery and high-availability configurations to support business continuity.
* Collaborative formulation and support of best-in-class technologies and services, particularly in support of teaching, learning, and research.
* Skilled vendor management, with a proven track record of successful partnerships with a wide variety of infrastructure vendor companies for short- and long-term implementations

Comprehensive responsibilities of this position include the following:

* Leading a team of IT professionals in ensuring highly reliable and sustainable enterprise technology systems and services.
* Advancing the university's program of excellence in information technology, particularly concerning virtual collaboration and convergence initiatives.
* Leading projects and initiatives to successful completion, including high-visibility, inter-departmental efforts to support both the administrative and academic research enterprise.
* Overseeing the planning, operation, and management of Stevens' Data Center.
* Performing capacity planning and developing technology expansion and enhancement plans.
* Serving as a key member of the disaster recovery / business continuity team to achieve and maintain constant preparedness.
* Ensuring the security and operational integrity of the university's systems and networks.
* Working collegially and collaboratively with constituencies to build consensus for initiatives and changes.
* Analyzing and developing recommendations for technology-related standards and policies.
* Developing effective relationships with colleagues in areas such as training, user support, communication, change management, etc.
* Assessing existing technology and services that support enterprise research computing capabilities and formulating strategies for expanding and enhancing this support.
* Providing leadership in the assessment, selection and implementation of new and emerging technologies to support Stevens' mission and strategic plan.
* Comprehensive vendor relationship management, from initiation (RFPs, submitting purchase orders, etc.) to execution and closure.

Required Qualifications

This is a position of substantial responsibility and visibility working in a very dynamic higher education environment. Applicants should have a record of increasingly responsible leadership and management experience, preferably in an academic environment, with demonstrated skills in planning, budgeting and cost effectiveness, organizational leadership, staff development, and team-building. In order to be considered, applicants must have exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, as well as a demonstrated commitment to customer service, excellence, and teamwork. The successful candidate will also exhibit strategic, long-term planning capability to craft the best suite of infrastructure solutions for Stevens with an eye towards information security.

* Bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
* Minimum of ten years intensive professional experience in one or more areas of technology under the responsibility of this position.
* Minimum of five years of demonstrated, effective leadership / supervisory experience.
* Strong organizational, prioritization, and project management skills.
* Excellent analytical, systems thinking, and strategic planning ability.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with both highly technical and non-technical audiences.
* Very strong knowledge and experience concerning information technology generally, and a clear understanding and appreciation of the technology issues facing higher education.
* In-depth experience in the specific technologies under the responsibilities of this position (e.g. network infrastructure, Microsoft Active Directory / Exchange, video and voice over IP, network and systems security, server planning and management, data center operations, business continuity, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

* Master's degree, fifteen years of intensive professional experience in information technology, and ten years of experience leading technology teams.
* Professional technology certification(s) (e.g. MCSE or similar).
* Substantial project management experience, training and/or certification.
* Significant higher education experience.
* Firm understanding of change management and organizational development.
