Essential Job Functions

A Digital Communications Systems Technician is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: installs, configures, tests, maintains, and repairs digital and Internet based communications systems, infrastructure, and equipment, including digital network telecommunications circuits, and digital communications equipment; installs, programs, tests, maintains, and repairs private branch exchange (PBX) and key telephone switching systems, and related equipment; provides technical support for telephone moves, additions, and changes; demonstrates and explains the correct operation of equipment; installs, rehabilitates, tests, troubleshoots, repairs and removes telephone and network cabling according to industry and County standards; drives automotive equipment to and from work sites; under direction from network systems administrators or telecommunications systems engineers, installs, repairs, and removes network communications hardware and related equipment; assists in the technical evaluation of equipment in coordination with engineering and operating personnel; and keeps time, material, and service records.

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Three years of experience in the installation, configuration, testing, maintenance, and repair of digital telephone private branch exchange (PBX) and key switching systems, one year of which must have been at the journey-level*.

* Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently and reliably. Positions at this level operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate solving method and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedure to carry out work.

LICENSE:

A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform essential job-related functions.

LICENSE INFORMATION

Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department. The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant's driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

PHYSICAL CLASS

Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

VISION:

Vision and color perception must be adequate to effectively and safety perform essential job-related duties.

EXAMINATION CONTENT

This examination will consist of an interview covering experience, work style, and general ability to perform the duties of the position weighted 100%.

Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the interview in order to be placed on the eligible register.

Final results will be sent by U.S. postal mail. Test scores cannot be disclosed over the phone.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

The County of Los Angeles is a Fair Chance employer.
