About the UnitThe Division of the Biological Sciences (BSD) is the largest operating unit of the University of Chicago. It includes the Pritzker School of Medicine, approximately 20 academic units, degree-granting committees, and research centers and institutes. BSD is located on the University's main campus in Hyde Park, ten minutes south of downtown Chicago. BSD's patient care operations are conducted primarily at the University of Chicago Hospital and clinics, which share the same campus.

Job Summary:

We seek a Database ETL Developer for the new Duchossois Family Institute (DFI) at the University of Chicago. The DFI seeks to accelerate research and interventions based on how the human immune system, microbiome and genetics interact to maintain health. A large focus of the DFI is on advancing scientific discovery through building a vibrant research and innovation community as part of a DFI Research Incubator. The Database ETL Developer will create and maintain an integrated knowledge base of biomedical data. Working within the informatics team, the candidate will be responsible for developing and maintaining queries and stored procedures, developing reports, troubleshooting and fixing data related issues, and assisting with data quality initiatives. The role will include integrating data from multiple sources to create a scalable database that supports Web-based querying and access. The role will also include ETL development, monitoring and maintenance of processes.

This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by extramural funds (e.g., grant, gift, endowment) which are renewed under provisions set by the grantor. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these extramural funds and satisfactory job performance. If this position is eliminated due to the discontinuation of extramural funding, you will be given a minimum of one pay period's written notice (if exempt: 30 days, if non-exempt: 2 weeks), or pay in-lieu of notice.

Responsibilities:

* Design, create, modify and remove relational database objects (tables, views, indexes, keys, stored procedures, functions, etc.) to support development projects.
* Design, build, and maintain extract-transformation-load (ETL) processes.
* Work with Application Development Teams, Project Management, QA, and Security to support a institute wide research data management platform.
* Assist other developers with MYSQL/PostgreSQL questions as needed.
* Support application testing efforts from a database perspective.
* Ability to profile and improve queries.
* Data expert for migrating data from existing applications and schema.
* Collaborate with and support biomedical scientists.

Additional Requirements

Education, Experience and Certifications:

Education:

* Bachelor's degree in computer science or another relevant computer related field required.

Experience:

Required:

* 2-3 years of experience as a database developer.
* Strong knowledge of relational database systems and SQL (MYSQL preferred).
* Understanding of data gathering, validation, cleansing, transforming, and modeling/diagramming techniques.
* Ability to efficiently write database code without compromising data quality, privacy or security.
* Knowledge of database design principles, query optimization, index management, integrity checks, statistics and isolation levels.
* Extract, transform, and load legacy data. Develop, test, integrate, and deploy ETL routines using ETL tools and external programming/scripting languages as necessary.
* Strong programming skills to code, script and automate using Python.
* Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills.

Preferred:

* 2-3 years of experience working with biomedical/clinical/PHI data.
* Experience in data wrangling/munging and statistical analysis.
* Experience with big data architectures is a plus.
* Biomedical/Clinical/PHI data experience is a plus.
* Experience working with research data and clinical development support.
