Job Description

Genentech has an exciting opportunity available for a Data Scientist to lead digital transformation efforts in the US Biologics Pharmaceutical Development group. The incumbent in this role will build analytical software products and solutions that support data-driven decision making in a cross functional environment. The primary focus is supporting Drug Product Development and Process Engineering workflows. The role coordinates data management efforts, develops custom software, and shapes the digital infrastructure in the department. This involves intimate collaboration with Scientists, Laboratory Automation Engineers and Product Development Teams within the function and across the Roche network.

Major Responsibilities

* Collaborate with Technical Development Scientists and Directors to understand business needs and priorities, and clearly communicate scope and progress of work.
* Translate business needs into functional and technical requirements for data management, reporting and modeling initiatives.
* Modernize and automate data flows, reports and analyses to develop interactive, employee-facing tools, platforms, and systems that inform, support, and enable scientific and business decisions.
* Curate and design data repositories in support of advanced analytics. Design, develop, and deploy statistical and machine learning models for analytical applications.
* Develop and manage reusable and modular code for analytical data pipelines, interactive data visualizations, and report generation.
* Work closely with project stakeholders and end users to understand their business processes and data management needs. Identify gaps and develop solutions.
* Develop, implement, and evolve the role of data science in Drug Product Development and Process Engineering internally and externally.
* Understand, support, and influence global data standardization and digitization efforts within the Genentech / Roche organizations and collaborate with IT partners to address infrastructure gaps.

Qualifications

The right candidate will be a results-oriented self-starter. We are seeking applicants for this position with a track record of success implementing advanced analytics and interacting with diverse data sources. Qualifications also include:

* BS, MS or PhD in a relevant field of study.
* 3+ years of relevant experience.
* Experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science, (Bio)statistics, Bioprocess Informatics, (Bio)process Engineering, Computational Science or related discipline.
* Experience producing high-quality software using the full software development life cycle with at least one relevant programming language (Python, Java, etc.). Ideally this includes documenting software requirements, building user stories, and defining business processes.
* Experience working with both relational (SQL) databases and non-relational (NoSQL) data structures.
* Experience working with and designing distributed systems in a cloud environment with an emphasis on cloud migrations and extensible / scalable deployments.
* Strong knowledge and experience working with analytical and data visualization tools (e.g., Python, R / R Shiny, Tableau, SAS, Spark).
* Expertise with statistical methods (descriptive, inferential, Bayesian, time series analysis, etc.) and application of machine learning algorithms (trend analysis and prediction, outlier detection, etc.).
* Ability to identify and define multiple stakeholders and tasks, and manage work time efficiently.
* Excellent verbal and written business communication skills, including the ability to present highly technical subject matter to non-technical audiences.
* Experience leading workshops to share best practices with colleagues.
* Demonstrated ability to understand complex scientific requirements to effectively communicate with users, understand their work, and translate requirements into solutions including Agile development environments.
* Comfortable working in a scientific environment, especially one that is related to drug development.
