WHAT IS THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIVISION? The mission of IRS Information Technology is to provide leadership in the delivery of information technology solutions that anticipate and meet enterprise-wide needs by empowering employees to deliver customer-centered, value-creating systems, products, services, and support.

WHAT DOES A COMPUTER ASSISTANT DO? As a Computer Assistant you will devise solutions to conventional problems usually covered by standardized or established procedures. Your efforts will influence the efficiency of processing services and adequacy of products used by other agency functions. The work also has an impact on the design and efficiency of methods and procedures established for existing, revised or new local applications.

As a Computer Assistant you will:

* Participate in the planning and delivery of a full range of customer support services related to print operations, electronic document management, media management, problem reporting and resolution.
* Monitor systems status and performance, observe and respond to system messages, and resolve operating problems, failures and malfunctions.
* Monitor program processing and adjust workflow by reconfiguring equipment.
* Identify a variety of hardware and software issues related to set-up, data collection, system malfunctions, power up/down, file backup and recovery.
* Analyze requests and write modules for extracting, sorting, reformatting, and merging data.
* Operate test equipment to assist in the diagnosis and correction of computer network problems.
* Maintain records and inventories of maintenance contracts, communications equipment, lines, wiring, and services.
* Prepare detailed and comprehensive reports of equipment malfunctions and corrective actions.

* Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement:

GS-5 LEVEL: One year or (12) twelve months of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-4) in the Federal Government. To be qualifying, your must have experience using data processing rules, scanning, indexing, and retrieving documents from the imaging database system; Experience with operations, command and action codes; Experience with operating and shipping procedures; Experience with computer library functions and quality control requirements; and resolving common problems on mainframe computer equipment. OR You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: A Bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited college or university. OR You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.

GS-6 LEVEL: One year or twelve (12) months of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is experience that is related to the work of this position and has provided you with the competencies required for successful job performance. To be qualifying your experience include basic programming features, hardware and software applications, and operational requirements to identify problems and interpret procedures; Experience with standard computer operations, computer communications systems and computer networking practices; Experience operating a variety of office automation equipment; Analyzing routine computer equipment failures to assist higher grade employees correct network problems; and experience in compiling and preparing reports and statistics on communications activities

GS-7 LEVEL: One year or twelve (12) months of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-06) in the Federal government. Specialized experience is experience that is related to the work of this position and has provided you with the competencies required for successful job performance. To be qualifying your experience must include fundamental programming features, hardware and software characteristics, applications, and operational requirements to identify problems, interpret procedures and methods, and implement required actions; Experience with research and data collection methods; Operating systems configurations, equipment characteristics and job control language to activate, control and monitor processing of print production workloads, detect errors and malfunctions; Experience operating a variety of office automation equipment, such as personal computer, as well as, varied electronic document management systems; Experience with software applications to prepare documentation for equipment and services, track inventories and update trouble tickets; and experience in compiling and preparing reports and statistics on communications activities and in analyzing routine computer equipment failures.

For Grades 5THRU 11: You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions.
