For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for Computational Scientists. You will be responsible for creating solutions in new and existing software to meet evolving computational challenges, designing and implementing performance and memory optimizations, writing documentation, and testing. You will work on multidisciplinary teams in an environment that focuses on problems of interest to LLNL and DOE programs. These positions are in the Computation Directorate.

This position will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

* Create a range of applications, including scientific, graphical user interface, database, and visualization applications on UNIX platforms.
* Identify and collect requirements, design and implement software solutions that are maintainable and extensible and follow standard methodologies for high performance scientific computing software.
* Maintain and improve existing software - adapting components to meet evolving requirements.
* Provide software development/computer science support to multidisciplinary teams and end-users.
* Take ownership of various projects/tasks and use team members skills to complete projects/tasks.
* Document development efforts in repositories, user manuals, and in informal and formal presentations.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level

* Provide solutions to complex problems that require in-depth analysis of multiple factors and the creative use of established methods.
* Handle multiple parallel tasks and priorities of partners to ensure deadlines are met.
* Lead small teams to address key challenges on the project and implement solutions throughout the code infrastructure.

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
* Comprehensive knowledge of Object Oriented Design concepts (inheritance, polymorphism, design patterns, etc)., the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library, OpenMP, Threads, or heterogeneous computing, and of software code development on Linux and Unix-based platforms.
* Experience with Python, developing in C++ and familiarity with C++ templates and the STL library and with software quality standard methodologies and software configuration management tools (Subversion, Perforce, git, etc).
* Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills to develop creative solutions to complex problems and time management, organization, and planning skills with experience prioritizing concurrent technical tasks.
* Experience working effectively in a diverse development team environment.
* Proficient verbal and written communication and social skills necessary to work effectively in a large technical team environment.

In Addition at the SES.3 Level

* Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.
* Significant experience with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) library, OpenMP, Threads, or heterogeneous computing.
* Advanced C++ or Python programming skills and familiarity with mesh-based computational modeling principles or science-based computational simulations.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
