We have multiple openings for Computational and/or Experimental Physicist(s) or Engineer(s) to pursue advanced and independent applied research in areas of materials science and constitutive modeling. Our mission encompasses aspects of computational and theoretical physics associated with understanding wave propagation and the response of mechanically loading granular and/or heterogeneous materials. These positions are in the Computational Geosciences Group of the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division.

Essential Duties

* Analyze complex requisite computer codes for simulation of experiments or for simulated data generation.
* Assess state-of-the-art constitutive models by comparison with experimental data.
* Develop, evaluate and provide in depth analysis of the complex response of materials under a myriad of loading conditions.
* Develop and implement new constitutive models and/or algorithms for use in massively parallel computing platforms.
* Author or contribute to reports, publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and deliver scientific presentations to internal and external customers.
* Work as technical expert on multidisciplinary team.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

* PhD in physics, engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
* Significant experience performing numerical simulations to compare results with experimental data or theory.
* Significant experience developing theoretical and/or algorithmic constitutive models for material response or equivalent application.
* Advanced knowledge running and contributing to scientific computer codes for simulations on HPC platforms.
* Significant experience completing outstanding research in relevant areas of physics and engineering.
* Ability to work independently on complex technical tasks, exert significant influence on technical objectives, provide in-depth analyses, and develop unique technical solutions.
* Demonstrated ability to perform and lead independent research in applied physics and collaborate effectively with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds.
* Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact in a clear and concise manner, author technical and scientific reports and papers, and deliver scientific presentations.

Desired Qualifications

* Experience with theoretical or numerical development of thermomechanical constitutive models.
* Experience working on problems related to shock compression of condensed matter.
* Familiarity with modern programming languages and version tracking software.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
