Job Description

On the Reality Platform team, we are developing the future of virtual and augmented reality where we envisioned mobile, lightweight AR/VR devices with very low power consumption. To achieve our vision, we need to be able to generate, transmit and store vast amount of graphics, audio and other types of data in an extremely efficient fashion. You will be joining a small group of experts specialized in data compression to design end-to-end compression and streaming solutions for VR and AR. The position requires both strong research and engineering capabilities in order to quickly design and prototype innovative solutions to challenging problems. Our goal is not just to harness the latest compression technologies, but also help push the frontier further. You will have chances to participate in the development of future compression technologies that not only benefit VR and AR, but also have an impact on Facebook as a whole or even across the industry. Due to ubiquity of the need for compression, you will be doing cross-disciplinary collaboration with other groups on the Reality Platform team, silicon experts and product teams in order to study how compression could better serve different subsystems and prototype practical solutions that see direct use in future products.

RESPONSIBILITIES

* Optimize encoding schemes for different scenarios using existing compression algorithms.

Stay up-to-date on the latest development in compression and streaming technologies.

Design and prototype custom domain-specific image, video and/or data compression algorithms.

Collaborate with other teams to establish different QoS for various subsystems, and develop plans to meet the QoS.

Work with silicon architects toward ASIC development of custom algorithms.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* 7+ years industrial experience working in the field of image and video compression

7+ years experience working with C/C++

Interpersonal experience with experience collaborating and working across teams

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Research background in DSP, compression and/or streaming and experience with standardization.

Demonstrable ability in prototyping or product incubation.

Understanding of real-time computer graphics pipeline, GPU hardware and ASIC development.
