We have multiple openings for Computer Scientists or Engineers with a background in network analysis and/or RF communications, with emphasis on modeling and simulation. You will contribute to research projects in the areas of communications, cybersecurity and national security. You will leverage LLNL's High Performance Computing (HPC) and network mapping capabilities to enable the development of high-fidelity, large-scale models of cyber network and cyber physical systems to understand effects, performance impacts, vulnerabilities and mitigations of those vulnerabilities. These positions are in the Computation Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either the SES.3 or SES.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties

* Develop new models that will enable network characterization and performance of cyber-attacks in information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) network environments.
* Leverage modeling and simulation for detecting and analyzing malware for both IT and OT environments, by developing creative techniques.
* Develop advanced models of IT and industrial controls systems (ICS) components and cyber-physical systems (CPS).
* Build simulations, leveraging LLNL's HPC capability to demonstrate impacts of cyber and cyber-physical attacks at scale.
* Develop, analyze, parse and reverse engineer computer network and Wi-Fi/RF communication protocols.
* Develop cross-domain strategies for increased security and resiliency of communication networks and critical infrastructure, working with researchers in other disciplines.
* Solve challenging national security problems while working in cross-discipline teams.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

In Addition at the SES.4 Level

* Lead multidisciplinary teams in the areas of modeling and simulation, critical infrastructure cyber security, information security, and network security to continue building LLNL's modeling and simulation capability.
* Pursue program development and growth opportunities by co-authoring proposals and proposing ideas that will address sponsor needs.
* Present results and provide subject matter expertise across multi-discipline projects, engaging with sponsors on a regular basis.

Qualifications

* Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
* Significant software engineering experience in C, C++, or Python.
* Significant experience working with modeling and simulation tools such as ns-3, OPNET, or OMNET++.
* Advanced knowledge of and/or experience in communications systems, including TCP/IP, LTE/5G, GSM, CDMA or Wi-Fi.
* Significant experience in communication network protocols (protocol development, parsing, and reverse engineering).
* Experience in secure protocols, software defined networks, or digital signal processing.
* Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with contending priorities, as well as approach difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity to change focus when necessary.
* Proficient verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate comprehensive knowledge effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and to non-cyber experts and the interpersonal skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment.

In Addition at the SES.4 Level

* Substantial software engineering experience and advanced knowledge of and experience in modeling and simulation or communications.
* Advanced project leadership experience and ability to work independently while effectively managing concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.
* Substantial experience writing research proposals and securing sponsor funding, with advanced interpersonal, verbal, and written skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, present and explain technical information, and provide advice to management.

Desired Qualifications

* Ph.D. degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
* Experience with coupled simulation, such as coupling of communication and power grid simulations, including PSLF, GridLAB-D, etc.
* Knowledge of one or more of the following computer science disciplines: networking, cybersecurity, parallel programming, embedded systems, high performance computing, scientific data analysis, machine learning, systems programming, software engineering, and data science.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
