Job Description

The Chief Architect is responsible for providing overall leadership, establishing and maintaining technical roadmaps and representing all architecture disciplines for the Optum Technology Team with a primary focus on United Health Care: E&I - Ancillary segments.

Primary Responsibilities: Provide architecture thought leadership (e.g., tool selection, standards, strategic direction, etc.)

* Drive disruption to business models using new/emerging technologies
* Define and lead an application modernization and rationalization agenda
* Work across Operations, Employer and Individual business areas and Optum Technology
* Maintain a rolling 3-year UHC E&I strategic architecture roadmap in partnership with other segment chiefs (and socialize, evolve and obtain buy-in for the roadmap)
* Participate in ongoing architecture governance activities
* Participate in leadership discussions regarding new technology introduction and/or enterprise system planning activities
* Translate technology concepts into business terminology
* Create deliverables that provide exceptional clarity and connections to business objectives
* Package presentations concisely for Optum & UHC senior leadership
* Provide direct leadership to a team of 10 people accountable for segment architecture
* Set / mature the vision and strategy for the team
* Create and foster an environment of innovation -
* Remove roadblocks and enable strategic risk taking
* Advocates and drives change management
* Enables and models the adoption of innovative behaviors and practices
* Commit time, focus and energy on the development, coaching and performance feedback for each employee on the team
* Advocate for the team by moving decisions forward and eliminating barriers
* Identify and select the right talent in support of our mission

Required Qualifications:

* 15 years of experience in multiple technology roles
* Demonstrated expertise in multiple architecture or technology disciplines
* Track record of success with application modernization and rationalization
* History of introducing new/emerging technology to disrupt business models
* Experience migrating from on-premise to cloud-based platforms
* Proven success creating business-enabling technology roadmaps
* Experience architecting scalable technology solutions that adjust to cyclical business patterns
* Proven experience in building microservice and event driven platforms
* Proven track record of effective working relationships with executives and key business partners to drive change agendas
* Demonstrated strategic thinking abilities and an enterprise-wide perspective
* History of executing with excellence: setting purposeful goals and achieving them through intelligent actions, which balancing competing priorities without losing momentum behind execution
* Experience leading through influence in a complex, large, matrixed, global environment
* Prior people management responsibilities
* Leadership style which fosters accountability, transparent communication and innovation
* High level of emotional intelligence and confidence
* Outstanding collaboration, strong influencing, problem solving and negotiation skills
* Proven ability to sell ideas to others outside of your direct team members

Preferred Qualifications:

* History of working within an Agile delivery model
* Experience moving an organization from waterfall to iterative
* Implementation of Event Driven Architecture, SOA, and Microservice patterns
* Experience with open source technologies
* Full-stack architecture experience
* Experience with version tolerant schemas
* Healthcare knowledge
