Job Description

What does the Lookout team do?

The Lookout team monitors the global Amazon network and customer application traffic to detect Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) and other application attacks. Every second of every day, our systems gather telemetry from thousands of routers, customer applications, and internal service logs, analyzing it to detect anomalies and identify top talkers. When our detection algorithms identify malicious traffic, we notify users and initiate mitigations. Lookout powers the DDoS detection behind AWS Shield, protecting customers using services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Route53, and others.

What challenges does Lookout tackle?

Lookout collects and analyzes data from thousands of sources and must be highly available, as it is most important when networks or services are under duress. The visibility we provide to Amazon CloudFront, Amazon Route53, Amazon S3, Amazon EC2 and other services enables them to respond to attacks maintain their own performance and availability. We also detect attacks against individual customer resources as part of AWS Shield. Our distributed aggregation systems run on thousands of servers across the AWS network edge, providing internal operators with customizable metrics and near-immediate aggregation.

What is special about Lookout?

At Lookout, we are passionate about building low-latency data streams and detection services to protect both AWS and our customers by finding and blocking bad actors. Our team of engineers builds highly-available, globally distributed anomaly detection systems that operate not just at the customer or region level, but at the scale of the Internet.

Why should you join us?

* We provide services that defend some of the Internet's largest businesses from bad actors and malicious requests.
* We care about both delighting customers and building high quality software. Our leadership principles (http://www.amazon.jobs/principles) empower managers to act and challenge us never to accept the status quo.
* We offer a fast-paced environment with a start-up atmosphere. We ship code every day.

To be successful in the role, you must be able to research, innovate and create unique solutions. There is no precedent to follow in this problem space. You will be involved from inception to deployment and beyond. You'll interact with our customers, gathering requirements, designing, implementing, testing and supporting the product operationally; soup to nuts. You will be expected to use your strong technical background and have a significant impact on the direction of the applications we develop.

AWS Perimeter Protection

Lookout is part of AWS Perimeter Protection. This team protects customers of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Amazon retail by providing tools to detect and filter malicious web requests. In 2016, we launched AWS Shield, a groundbreaking external service offering Advanced DDoS protection and mitigation to customers using AWS. In 2017, we extended this service to cover Elastic Compute, and supported the 2018 launch of AWS Global Accelerator. Moving forward, we are continuing to add new detection capabilities and a broader surface area.
