The Assistant Systems Administrator (SCAD/DCS) is responsible for day-to-day computing support for faculty, staff and students and reports to the Director of Computing Services for Physics. This is a permanent full-time position.
This position provides computer and technical support to the Department of Physics, the Princeton Center for Theoretical Science (PCTS), and other centers/initiatives hosted by Physics and Jadwin Hall. The position is expected to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve any computing related issue/question posed by faculty, staff, and students in the department and centers of the below:
* Installation, maintenance, and repair of desktop/laptop computing systems.
* Support and administration of Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux systems.
* Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair computing related issues.
* Support for all office productivity software (Microsoft Office - Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Exchange, Outlook, Exchange; Photoshop; Acrobat), university administrative systems, and in-house applications. Includes installation, troubleshooting, and user assistance and training.
* Installation, configuration and maintenance of back-up software on all desktop/laptop computing systems.
* Educate and train staff on proper computing techniques and use of applications.
* Assist system administrator with basic support for Department's Linux-based research computing facility including account creation, system monitoring, processing trouble tickets, resetting passwords, and remote access for users.
* Prepare equipment for surplus.
* Provide guidance for faculty, staff, collaborators and students on their computing purchases; install and configure new desktop computer systems (Mac and PC), printers, scanners, smart phones, tablets, laptops, and other computing related devices.
* Assist users and maintain pathways from home computers to campus systems for remote access to desktop and research computers.
* Use the Physics helpdesk ticket system to manage tasks, requests for help, day-to-day activities.
* Serve as the department's main A/V contact, which includes troubleshooting Tricaster recordings, issue with video conferencing platforms, Crestron, Clary Icon, Apple TV, and other equipment setups as needed.
* Provide support for the department's web applications including creation, development and maintenance of sites.
* Scientific application support (Mathematica, Matlab, TeX/LaTeX, Cygwin, xfig, etc.)
* Hardware and software deployments
* Take full advantage of training opportunities provided by the SCAD/DCS program.
* Attend monthly SCAD/DCS meetings and participate in other pertinent OIT and/or campus computing groups.
* A bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience, with experience in a university setting a plus.
* Significant experience in administration, maintenance, and user support of Mac OSX and Windows. Experience with Linux as both a user and administrator.
* Understanding of and experience with TCP/IP networking and related protocols.
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

* Experience in installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and using standard systems and software applications: Exchange, IMAP, Office Suite (including Outlook) and other Windows based systems and devices; Mac OSX utilities, calendar and mail applications and other OSX based devices.
* Experience using and administering Microsoft SharePoint and Google Drive.
* A strong customer service attitude, initiative, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and to manage multiple priorities simultaneously are essential.
* The ability to keep abreast of new technologies including computer software and hardware, smart phones, and peripheral devices is necessary for this position.
* The desire and ability to learn and utilize new technologies easily.
* Must be able to lift 50 lbs., twist bend and work in awkward positions.
* Familiarity with Linux and Linux system administration.
* Ability to write simple shell scripts to automate administrative tasks.
* Familiarity with Audio/Visual tools and equipment.
