DESCRIPTION

The Marine Physical Laboratory Division (MPL) at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) is seeking an Applications Programmer 2 who will apply professional programming concepts for small to medium-sized projects or portions of larger projects. This position will be working in the Jaffe Laboratory at MPL.

The Applications Programmer 2 incumbent shall be responsible for working with a real time image acquisition system that will be tested in the laboratory and then deployed in the ocean. The position will assist in developing instruments to collect data in the ocean and will analyze the data to obtain verification of system performance as well as the measurement of new and interesting scientific phenomena.

The laboratory is involved with the development of observational tools in optics, acoustics, and robotics that transition from working lab systems to ocean observations. The incumbent will take the instrument from the lab to the field to obtain environmental data and to analyze that data in the context of scientific questions to obtain results that characterize the observed ecosystem.

The Jaffe lab collaborates extensively with groups and institutions both within and outside UC San Diego (UCSD) including, at present, Duke University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Lockheed Martin Aculight, Computer Science Engineering Department (CSE) and Qualcomm Institute at UCSD; and Integrative Oceanography Division (IOD) at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

The National Science Foundation, the Office of Naval Research, California Sea Grant, the U.S. Army Breast Cancer Research Program, and the Seaver Institute of Los Angeles, as well as the W. M. F. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles have supported the lab's ongoing research.

* This is a 50% - 100% career position with full medical and retirement benefits. Must be flexible and available to work variable hours 50% - 100% of the time based on department needs.
* Position requires occasional remote work at sea from either a shore based or ship based operation.
* Must be willing and able to travel internationally to participate in experiments in various countries/venues.

QUALIFICATIONS

* Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering with five (5) years of experience post Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


* Demonstrated intermediate skills associated with the design, development, modification and deployment of software, including object-oriented programming concepts.


* Strong experience in C++ and python programming microcontrollers using the Arduino IDE, specifically Teensy products.


* Demonstrated experience designing, developing, modifying and evaluating software. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications.


* Proven experience performing post processing of data consisting of writing custom code or using existing software packages to evaluate both data quality and interpret ability of the system to obtain the correct scientific information when compared with other techniques.


* Strong experience and knowledge of secure software development and common programming tools (i.e. developing, maintaining and redesigning websites).


* Demonstrated experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks and AutoDesk


* Experience with machine vision cameras and using the camera SDK to control and acquire images in C++


* Demonstrated software repository skills.


* Proven experience with system integration of power supplies, batteries, embedded computers, and cameras.


* Demonstrated knowledge of other IT related areas.


* Effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.


* Strong problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
