Job Description

Job Summary

Application development leadership role that leads and directs senior technical staff within the digital IT area. This position manages application development teams across all phases of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) with a focus on high quality and speed to market. Collaboration with business functions throughout the development lifecycle is also a key requirement of this position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:

Directs plans and controls all activities and staff of application development within the digital organization and has full management responsibility for the performance and development of subordinate staff in accordance with corporate strategic direction. May include matrix reporting relationships.

Develops code based on business requirements or user stories of diverse scope and complexity.

Works closely with client department?s management to identify system requirements assess impact to other systems compare costs and benefits and recommend solutions for the highest risk programs.

Participates in the identification and selection of information technologies vendors and/or consulting resources which assist the functional business units in meeting their strategic objectives. Includes managing vendor relationships as required including off-shore or remote consulting services.

Monitors new developments and industry best practices to incorporate into CNA IT and operational management enterprise systems; and actively and enthusiastically promotes the creative use of technology to improve productivity and enhance customer service across IT.

Prepares and manages an annual budget for IT areas of responsibility.

Senior level knowledge of internal business partners? functions and systems.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to organize and plan effectively for short and long-term goals.

Ability to manage offshore and remote consulting resources.

Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.

Reporting Relationship

Typically AVP or above

Skills Knowledge and Abilities

1. Preferred experience with the insurance industry its products and services.

2. Strong software development skills developing commercial grade applications.

3. Solid understanding and experience in Agile process such as SCRUM and Extreme Programming.

4. Proven experience in Test Driven Development (TDD) Methodology.

5. Solid experience with development in a pair programming environment and versatility with modern Dev Ops methodologies and tools such as Jenkins Concourse CI and / or Gradle etc.

6. Superior problem solving and analytical skills throughout the entire development lifecycle.

7. Strong ability to effectively function in a team environment and possess strong written and verbal communication skills.

8. Strong ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels of external and/or internal business partners within scope of responsibility team and/or matrix environment.

9. Strong leadership and management skill/experience demonstrating integrity professionalism and proven outcomes.

10. Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite other business-related software systems or programming languages.

11. A passion for growing technical skills and solving complex business issues.

Education and Experience

1. Bachelor?s Degree in Computer Science Information Technology or related discipline; or equivalent experience2. Minimum of ten years of application development experience with significant team and project/application management experience (specifically team management for this IT management position).3. Applicable certifications preferred.
