Symbiont is a New York-based financial technology company building new kinds of computer networks to connect independent financial institutions together and allow them to share business logic and data in real time. This involves developing a distributed system which is also decentralized, and which allows for the creation of smart contracts, self-executing cryptographic agreements among counterparties. To do so, we’re using a lot of techniques in blockchain technology, as well as those from traditional distributed systems, programming language design and cryptography.
Many financial markets, such as those for private equity and syndicated loans, still have inefficient, manual workflows for performing everyday “back-office” operations. Often, there is no central authority that can be trusted to manage the data with traditional software. When there is, this authority can sometimes be disintermediated to the advantage of other market participants. Blockchain technology promises to allow for the modernization of financial technological infrastructure by incorporating cutting-edge results of computer science, but without changing the trust models or operational assumptions of institutional finance.
As a company, Symbiont strives hard to stay on the forefront of the field of software engineering, in both our methods and our materials. Whether it be through the use of advanced tooling or powerful languages and frameworks, we aim to optimize developer workflows wherever possible. And by streamlining development, minimizing technical debt, and maximizing elegance in design, we remain a small, focused team working on some of the most challenging problems in computer science. By joining Symbiont, you’ll become an integral member of a highly experienced team of engineers with a wide range of expertise, working together in a technically challenging environment to solve some of the most ambitious open problems in our field.
