Stride is a team of real people. And we used to be just as confused about healthcare as you are.
In mid-2013, We set out to bring healthcare decisions up-to-date with the rest of the consumer web. Nobody uses the word consumer in healthcare (okay, well they're trying to now). It’s always been a patient, an employee, an insured. Healthcare companies are focused on the traditional “payers,” not the consumer. Well, guess who pays the bills at the end of the day? Us. We are customers and deserve to be treated like we’re buying expensive, complex products.
Prior to founding Stride, Noah built and sold privacy products at Reputation.com for 5 years. Matt built personalized search experiences for Priceline, Netflix, Mini Cooper and healthcare companies like DestinationRx. It's personalized experiences like these that we need in healthcare today.
In early 2013, Noah needed to select a health plan from his wife’s employer options. There were only 4 choices, and we’re pretty healthy people, so it couldn’t be that hard, right? He searched for favorite doctors, but had to do it in four different places. He tried to search for some preferred drugs to figure out what they would cost and found it nearly impossible to compare. In search of an apples-to-apples comparison, he built an excel model to figure out what might happen if he tore his knee up skiing again or needed emergency care, but very quickly realized it takes more data than a single person can wrangle with to find the answer to those questions. And that data is very hard to get.
Everybody told us there were already tools out there to help consumers with their coverage decisions. We tried all of them. None of the tools built confidence in the decision or helped understand the product I was purchasing. In fact, none treated health insurance like a consumer product at all.
The average consumer is willing to spend 9 minutes choosing a plan so often ends up taking an “educated guess.” It was clear to us that it was time for a new vocabulary: insurance in the context of an individual's life. We set out to ensure consumers can make a logic-driven decision in that amount of time, or less—without picking up the phone, without confusion, and without resorting to educated guesses.
In short, we're hell-bent on translating healthcare into language we can all understand.
We work hard, we sweat the details, and we enjoy life away from our computers together too. We’re not just a healthcare startup — we’re a team that likes healthy living.
We work side-by-side in SOMA. We’re flexible with schedules but we believe the best product comes from a collaborative team. We balance shipping frequently with maintaining a high level of quality in our product. We've built products that our customers love, and like to measure personal pride in product as a core performance metric.
