    What We Do

A new way to build, based on open materials, extensible software, and modular hardware - and a straight path to high volume production.

    Why Join Us?

    • We're backed by top investors, including DCM, Floodgate, and Stanford, and have raised $12mm+ in total funding.
    • You will work with a world-class team of engineers and scientists from places like Google, Apple, Autodesk, and Stanford. We've built a state-of-the-art 3D printing stack from scratch in <3 years.
    • We have a unique approach to revolutionizing the manufacturing with 3D printing, based on having a deep understanding of our partners' manufacturing processes, and then optimizing the manufacturing flow using a combination of our hardware, cloud backend, and data analysis.
    • Our customer base has grown by more than 10x in the last year.

    Interview Process

Our process is fairly straightforward, and designed to be as transparent, fair, and efficient as possible for both you and us.

    1. An introductory phone call to let you understand the opportunity, what your teammates and work will be like, and also to learn about your interests and skills
    2. A 30-minute multiple-choice quiz
    3. An onsite interview to meet the engineering team and other Origin members. We usually have 2-3 rounds of technical interviews, broken into three categories:
      • CS fundamentals and coding
      • Design and architectural discussion, revolving around actually engineering problems that we are currently working on
      • Non-coding applied mathematics problems to gauge your ability to work on technical problems that are adjacent to software engineering; we work in a cross-disciplinary environment where ability to think on your feet is valuable

    Our Story

Chris and Joel started Origin in late 2015 to 3D print parts for customers using open source printers but soon faced a formative deadline. They needed to produce and ship thousands of shoe tags in one week or risk upsetting their largest customer - Marshawn Lynch’s Beast Mode. To ramp up and meet their deadline, they hired a technician and ran printers 24 x 7, developing and testing new software and open materials, trying everything to find the fastest path to a consumer-grade product.

The team shipped on time (barely) and impressed their customer but came up with something even more valuable: insight. Feeling the pain of unreliable hardware, limited software, and brittle materials, the two Founders saw an opportunity to create a whole new platform from the ground up and a dramatically new and open approach to additive manufacturing that combines open materials, extensible software, and modular hardware. This approach, called Open Additive Production, provides manufacturing customers with the flexibility they need. Now they can focus on design and customers instead of tools.
