We’re out to design a better world, and we need your help.
IDEO.org improves the lives of poor and vulnerable communities through design. To affect that change, we work directly with foundations, nonprofits, and social enterprises; create tools and resources that teach human-centered design; and influence the social sector with stories of human-centered design in action. IDEO.org works directly with organizations across a range of focus areas including health, financial services, gender equity, education, and agriculture.

    Software Engineer

Full Time, Temporary, New York, NY
    Position Summary
IDEO.org has an opportunity for an experienced Software Engineer to join a dynamic project team in our
New York City studio through September 2017. As part of a multidisciplinary product team, you’ll tackle
complex, poverty-related challenges alongside other builders and thinkers from various backgrounds.
IDEO.org is partnering with a leading financial insitution on a $4.8 million, 18-month program to develop
digital tools to help low-income Americans understand and improve their financial health. The program
will collaborate and fund a range of community-based organizations to develop, deploy and implement
these tools, which will be open source and available for any to use.
This role offers the opportunity to create new digital experiences and interactions to drive healthier
outcomes around money, to educate and demystify finance, and to empower people to take control of their
financial life. Through deep immersion in the everyday lives of low-income people, the team will generate
insights about possible interventions and turn them into prototypes, experiments, and production digital
tools. We are looking for creative and confident engineers who can quickly build tools which are effective,
impactful and targeted to their audience.
    Qualifications
    You will:
    • Develop delightful web experiences that are clean, pragmatic, and impactful.

    • Share open source work and help build a developer community.
    • Contribute to the team’s engineering culture and practices, including norms for code reviews, cadence,
    and architectural discussions.
    • Develop testing and release strategies.
    • Build with accessibility, security, efficiency, and scalability in mind.
    • Collaborate with non-profit community partners on technical implementation.
    • Participate in the hiring and leading of contractors as needed for the project.
    • Collaborate with the rest of the team in all parts of the human centered design process.
    • Contribute to the IDEO.org New York culture.
    You have:
    • Passion for delivering incredible user experiences and pride in the work you produce.
    • 4+ years experience and excellent programming skills in modern HTML, CSS, and javascript.
    • Experience with popular javascript and web app frameworks (e.g. jQuery, React, angular) and testing
    frameworks (RSpec, Mocha, etc).
    • Experience shipping code in production.
    • Experience developing responsive web experiences.
    • The ability to handle basic backend development, creating simple RESTful APIs that drive web apps.
    • Bonus: Experience and interest working with and contributing to open-source projects, and experience
