What is Docker?

Docker is an open platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship, and run distributed applications. Consisting of Docker Engine, a portable, lightweight runtime and packaging tool, and Docker Hub, a cloud service for sharing applications and automating workflows, Docker enables apps to be quickly assembled from components and eliminates the friction between development, QA, and production environments. As a result, IT can ship faster and run the same app, unchanged, on laptops, data center VMs, and any cloud.

Why working at Docker?

Docker Inc is on its way to revolutionize how developers and devops think about deploying server applications. Docker containers make it possible to package (web) applications in lightweight, portable units that can easily be used on a a laptop, a single server and in large production setups.

Whilst the main project is open source, a lively community and lots of commercial projects is rapidly developing around this new technology. Think about automatically building these containers, sharing them and managing where and how they run.
