    What is Culture Robotics

    We build automated fermentation infrastructure and operate it as a service for biotech companies. Our customers send organisms to us, we grow them in our automated fermentors, and we send back data and samples. They design organisms that produce vegan proteins, therapeutics, bio-plastics, and clean meat. We speed up their R&D so they can get their products to market faster. We've built our own fermentor hardware, backend software that runs all of our experiments, and robotic systems to automate physical lab operations. We're also building software to simulate fermentation processes and help design experiments and improve fermentation processes in an automated fashion.

    We are currently 8 full-time employees and we're currently hiring for 6 positions across software and hardware to speed up our development. Our current team is composed of engineers who previously worked or studied at Google[x], Facebook, MIT, and CalTech. The founders, Will and Matt, built UAVs at Google[x] prior to starting the company.

    Funding! We raise a large seed round out of YCombinator last May from leading investors. We haven't done a fundraising announcement yet, but I'd be happy to chat about our funding one on one.

    We have a number of existing customers and we're working to scale-out our infrastructure and build more features for customers. There are tons of fascinating tech projects to work on here that range from control systems (for the reactors), data science/ML/simulation of fermentation processes, robotics and automation control, and bio/chemical engineering. There are also opportunities to grow within the organization as we're still a small but fast-growing team.

    What you'll do

    • Develop applications in Python and on AWS that allow our customers to schedule, design, monitor, and analyze their experiments.
    • Build out the backend data infrastructure.
    • Help recruit, hire and lead our software engineering team from the ground up, and then provide mentorship to the members on your team.
    • Create new APIs for backend services.
    • Write frameworks to analyze thousands of experiments.
    • Help with code reviews.
    • Write software to interface with analytical instruments.
    • Program robotic systems and bioreactors to automate the operations of our experiments.
    • Build a high throughput simulation system to test our software and wet lab protocols.
    • Improve our development processes and internal tooling.

    About you:

    • You have at least two years of experience in software development.
    • You’re proactive and enjoy thinking about the big picture.
    • You’ve built a number of projects in your spare time that you’re proud of.
    • You’re curious and enjoy learning new things.
    • You’re product focused. You think about the perspectives of end users even when it might not be expected of you.
    • It’s important to you that you’re building something that solves a problem and helps end users.

    Nice to have:

    • You have experience with Python, C++, Docker and AWS.
    • You have experience developing laboratory information management systems or products used by scientists.
    • You have a personal interest in biology, biotechnology, synthetic biology, and or therapeutics.
    • You have had some exposure to cell culture, fermentation, or chemical synthesis.
