BuildZoom was founded by David Petersen and Jiyan Wei, who grew up as friends in Bethesda, Maryland and have been collectively working on building and managing data-driven companies for a long time. In 2011, David and Jiyan built the initial version of BuildZoom to solve personal challenges they both experienced with finding reliable home improvement contractors. They made their offering available to the public and before long, saw demand for their service increase dramatically.
In 2013, they moved to San Francisco and participated in Y Combinator Winter 2013 class. Shortly thereafter, they raised an additional round of seed funding lead by Formation 8’s Joe Lonsdale, the co-founder of Palantir, a mission-driven computer software and services company, specializing in data analysis. Today, BuildZoom is headquartered in the SoMa district of San Francisco, working around the clock to achieve its consumer-driven mission of bringing greater transparency, reliability and trust to the remodeling and construction industry.
We look for passionate and talented people who strive to be great. We embrace unconventional solutions to challenging problems and believe that people should have the flexibility and independence to be creative and experimental - provided effort is always applied with purpose. We take the time to step back, evaluate and understand our efforts so wins can be nurtured and losses turned into learnings. We believe the team comes before the individual because great challenges can only be met through collaboration.
