    About Andromium

Andromium is looking for a passionate and experienced Android engineer. As one of the first members of the team, you'll be afforded significant autonomy, equity, and room to grow with the company. We are building a new type of computing, which stretches and seeks to define the limits of Android, all to enable productivity for the next billion internet users.

Our company is building the Andromium platform, which makes Android function as a familiar desktop OS by just downloading an app. Our goal is to power productive work for the next billion workers.

We launched our flagship hardware, the Superbook, in 2016 - a shell that provides the laptop form factor that can be plugged into any Android smartphone. The Superbook raised $3M on Kickstarter and is shipping in early 2017.

We're looking for skilled Android engineers to take technical ownership on one of the following priorities for the company:

    1. Build out our SDK that makes it possible for Android apps to look like one interface on mobile and another on 'desktop' / Andromium
    2. Create full parity between the Andromium app experience and what people expect from a desktop OS.

    You are looking for

    • A challenge. Stating the obvious, we're not looking for someone who wants to develop apps for Android, but rather someone who wants to extend and improve how Android is used.
    • To explore the limits of something deeply technical. Besides being technically skilled and able to lead major engineering efforts, we're looking for someone with an intense curiosity for deeply technical things most people shy away from.
    • A role with real social impact. Andromium will enable people in the developing world (and of course at home) to access productivity for work and learning with the power of their smartphone. For mobile-first economies, our product will enable students and workers alike to do so much more.

There are very few people that can build an OS inside of an OS - we're seeking that elite team.

    Our culture

We're a small team of Google and Y Combinator alumni with past experience running software companies with a mission. We're looking for people looking to do more than just build an app - we want to bring actual change to the world by providing more affordable access to work and learning. Our team works out of downtown SF, enjoys good BBQ of all varieties, and is more than comfortable with working remote. And as an early part of our team, you will play a major role in defining our culture.

    Candidate Sketch

    1. Min 2 year experience working with Android development
    2. Good understanding of the internal workings of the Android OS
    3. The ability to dig into the Android Open Source Project code to find ways to achieve functionality not publicly documented in the SDK
    4. Comfort working with Android Debug Bridge for code debugging and crash analysis.

    Other Plusses

    1. Prior experience developing Android ROMs
    2. Experience working with NDK
    3. Understand Android memory management, and have experience working on memory usage optimization

Note: Given the size of the team, we prefer local candidates, but would give exception to the exceptional.
