    The Strategic Sourcing Market Opportunity

Companies from $50 million to $500 billion in revenue still use email and spreadsheets to source their suppliers. This process has not changed much over the last decade and creates numerous business challenges when managing this enormous sum of money. Spending falls into two broad categories:

Direct Spend: This spend is for products and services that are directly related to the company’s product (such as raw materials, components, or hardware). This type of spend involves working with hundreds and potentially thousands of interrelated suppliers in order to design and produce finished goods. The process is made difficult by siloed communications, intensive amounts of detail, and complex supply chain risks.

Indirect Spend: This spend consists of products and services for the company’s overall operations that cannot be tied to the company’s product. Marketing expenses, janitorial services, office supplies, and business insurance are a few examples, and large companies in nearly all industries maintain thousands of these suppliers. This large number of suppliers, and their diversity, challenges companies to constantly reevaluate their spending. The process is made difficult by extensive requirements gathering and decision-making by the numerous stakeholders impacted across the business.

Whether direct or indirect, spending with suppliers is fundamental part of doing business that will not change anytime soon. The process will intensify as supply chains continue to grow more complex, and competitive forces drive companies to focus on their core competencies while pushing more work to suppliers.

What will change is the technology underlying how supplier sourcing and engagement is executed. Our customers use Scout to eliminate manual work, increase collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, and gain visibility over the sourcing process. Scout’s mission is to make enterprise commerce faster, less risky, and more transparent by providing the single source of truth for Sourcing and Supplier Engagement.
