About Polymathic

Polymathic was founded in 2010 by a programmer-CEO and pivoted from media production/dev shop to proprietary software consulting around year 2. Our niche has become more focused (see below) over the last 1.5 years and has been rounded out by a formal CTO (both executives are technical AND women!)

80% or more of our clientele is composed of entrepreneurs seeking to disrupt an industry they’ve been a part of for decades by building a startup for that particular industry. In addition, we’ve seen a recent increase in interest/projects from existing companies looking to either technologize their antiquated business model, or innovate new products for their existing customer-base. Recently we started work on a new service-offering targeting private equity firms who want to explore the world of startupdom, by identifying markets typically on their M&A radar and then building a product to disrupt that industry (first with EIR/TIR services and then R&D to launch a product).

About the Job

As an engineer at Polymathic, you will be leading a product from inception to launch. And it will actually launch — and be used by real people who have a serious pain point. The work may not always be sexy, but it is always awesome.

You will ....

  • Work with clients and a small — and growing — team of developers to build awesome software.
  • Work with a team that cares about writing quality code and launching useful products into the world.
  • Work in a flexible and supportive environment, including office-optional days, team lunches, and generous benefits.

Experience Needed

  • have led the launch of a product or substantial feature set
  • feel comfortable doing a basic code review on any of our projects
  • take performance, scope, priorities and design into consideration when architecting solutions, without over-architecting
  • are unwilling to deploy untested, unreviewed code

Skills Needed

  • have used Ruby on Rails, Django, or Node for numerous projects in production
  • love test-driven development - JavaScript testing a plus
  • are comfortable writing maintainable HTML and CSS - SASS experience is a plus
  • write object-oriented JavaScript when appropriate - familiarity with React, Ember, Angular, or Backbone a plus

About You

Engineers at Polymathic ask questions before coding, scope to the smallest deployable change, and communicate their ideas clearly to other engineers, project managers, and clients.

As a company and a team, we value the following in each other and our clients.

  • Autonomous - works independently on a project but will always ask questions when needed
  • Transparent - communicates what they are working on, what they need, and when they are working
  • Collaborative - works closely with team to ensure everyone is on the same page and knowledge is shared
  • Entrepreneurial - aware of business & product trade-offs
  • User-focused - identifies and targets product’s desired users
  • Quality-driven - creates products that are a joy to work with for everyone from users to future developers
  • Pleasant - has a sense of humor, patience, and is kind
  • Open Minded - actively seeks to understand another person’s perspective and contributes constructively to conversations. We come from different walks of life and we try to be understanding of our differences. Be ready to make an extra effort to make every member of the team feel at home.
